Special Ops: Lioness returns with The Idiot Army, directed by Robert McLachlan and written by Taylor Sheridan. Episode 4 ended on two bleak notes. Joe’s team missed her by ten minutes at the Baltimore hangar, and Kaitlyn Meade drove to the McNamara house to tell Neal his wife might not come home.
This hour goes almost entirely the other way, spending nearly its full runtime in the six-months-earlier timeline as the honeypot traps set at the end of last week finally close. It is a slower, talkier episode built around interrogations and one long situation room argument.
Then the closing minutes jump forward and reveal where Joe’s plane actually landed. Here is everything that goes down.
The Lioness Team’s Traps Catch Multiple Foreign Assets
The CIA operation runs on two fronts at once, and both are designed to let the enemy make the first move. We already saw Joe and Cruz making the move on one of the assets in the final scenes of Episode 4. In this episode, Two Cups is in a gentlemen’s club posing as a salesman for a defense contractor, with Tex and Randy also working undercover.
Two Cups gets picked up by a stripper, and he goes home with this woman. She takes him to a house wired with hidden cameras. We see how the foreign assets conduct their business. A stripper is paid to bring back well-connected men and have s*x with them. The encounter is recorded, and the recording becomes leverage.
However, what the operators do not know is that Two Cups came in expecting it. When three men produce the footage of him having s*x with the stripper the next morning and start making demands, he secretly notifies his team, and they come through the door. Everyone in the house is arrested and taken to Langley.
Meanwhile, the second trap is in motion as well. Cruz and Josie take their asset, Cade, home with them, but the evening ends with Zoe Saldaña‘s Joe, Tucker, and Bobby barging in and taking him down. Joe makes her position very clear. She is not FBI, this is not an arrest, and none of the protections she is counting on apply to her.
Cade folds fast, sharing that he was being blackmailed into doing this dirty spy work. Years earlier at Georgetown, someone handed him answers to a test he could not pass on his own, and he took them. He shared that it became a permanent leash, held by a contact codenamed Rooster, whom he describes as a “nerdy math guy.” This handler has spent years trading Cade’s silence for confidential material from the defense firm that employs him.
Joe’s counter is simple. She uses Cade’s own phone to arrange a meeting with Rooster the next morning, and the team takes the handler exactly as planned. With both the asset and his handler in custody, the CIA finally has something to pull on.
The Assets Lead the Team to a Professor Named Richard Ealy
The interrogations that follow are hard and legally ugly. Nicole Kidman‘s Kaitlyn confirms the agency’s position that these detainees are threats to national security rather than criminal defendants, which means no constitutional protections and no fixed limit on how long they can be held.
The captured handler, Rooster, gives up a name. Joe later reveals this name to the Secretary of State as Richard Ealy, who teaches at Georgetown and is the source of the whole scheme, feeding exam answers to students willing to cheat and holding that choice over them for years afterward.
Joe explains that Ealy lost faith in his own country’s system and set out to weaken it from inside, one student at a time. Joe goes for the arrest, and when Tucker asks why she wants to take him down personally, she shares her reason.
Her contempt is aimed at the hypocrisy rather than the politics. She later explains it to Neal over a drink that night, giving us what the title means. An “idiot army” is made up of comfortable people who adopt an enemy’s ideology without ever having lived under it.
Meanwhile, the Belarusians, who were arrested in Two Cups’ trap, are bound for Guantanamo. Kyle is still working them, and Joe wants him to get to the bottom of who attacked her at her home.
Where Does Joe’s Plane Land in the Present Timeline?
In the episode’s final moment, we are taken back to the present. The jet carrying a kidnapped Joe has landed at a private airfield with cars waiting, and as the Russian agent pulls a gagged Joe toward them, she spots a flag in the distance. It is the state flag of Texas, meaning that she hasn’t left the country yet. Joe’s team can still go for the save, but we will have to wait for it in the upcoming episodes.
Earlier, FBI Director Wexler makes it plain that she is tired of being left out of CIA operations. Her complaint about Lioness going lawless goes nowhere. Morgan Freeman‘s character is focused on the larger problem, which is the asset list, which reaches into both chambers of Congress along with figures across public and private life.
Arresting them publicly would hand Russia the exact outcome it wants, which is Americans losing faith in their own institutions. So Joe offers a third option. Confront each compromised official privately with the evidence, then give them a choice between quiet retirement and prosecution. This will be the team’s move in the past timeline for the upcoming episodes.
