Solo Leveling: The Most Powerful Tanker-Class Hunters, Ranked

Spoiler Alert !!!
This article contains spoilers for Solo Leveling and Solo Leveling: Ragnarok

Tankers in Solo Leveling (IMDb rating: 8.5/10) don’t get the hype that Mages or Assassins get, but their job is honestly just as important. In fact, if we forget about the monarchs, the strongest human himself is a tank. These are the Hunters who stand on the front line, take the hits, and keep their team alive so everyone else can do the flashy stuff.

Some tankers lean on raw size and strength while some use shields and magic barriers. But not every tanker is on the same level. Rank alone doesn’t tell the full story, since an A-Rank tanker with insane feats can easily outshine some S-Ranks. Let’s take a look at the strongest tanks in the story.

7. Hwang Dongsuk Could Handle C-Rank Monsters Without Issue

Hwang Dongsuk led the Lizards, which was a party that made money by throwing weaker Hunters under the bus. As a C-Rank tanker, he could take on C-Rank monsters with no problem and clearly knew how to use a sword and shield in a fight.

If it wasn’t for Sung Jinwoo, he would’ve survived really long. That said, his ceiling is exactly what you’d expect from a C-Rank. He set up an ambush on Jinwoo and Yoo Jinho, and it got him killed.

6. Kim Chul’s Ego Cost Him More Than His Shield Ever Protected

Kim Chul was an A-Rank tanker from the White Tiger Guild, and on paper, he was pretty good at his job. He used his taunt skills really well and used his shield and sword to hold the line. The problem was never his skill; it was his attitude.

He looked down on lower-ranked Hunters and abandoned them in the Red Gate to save himself. That decision came back to bite him when Sung Jinwoo humiliated and killed him. He now exists as Jinwoo’s shadow soldier, Iron. As Iron, he may land at the second spot in this ranking, but he doesn’t qualify as a hunter anymore.

5. Randolph Terrorized Rivals as America’s Most Ruthless Enforcer

Randolph was an A-Rank tanker for the Scavenger Guild, and he fought with a massive shield and war hammer. He wasn’t shy about using fear as a weapon, at one point threatening to wipe out an entire rival group if they didn’t back down.

He respected raw strength above everything else. Still, being the muscle for a strong guild only gets you so far, and he was ultimately taken out in Solo Leveling: Ragnarok.

4. Son Kihoon Survived Even the Battle of Monarchs

Son Kihoon leads Strike Squad B for the Hunters Guild as an A-Rank tanker, and his resume is packed with fights way above his pay grade. He traded blows evenly with a High Orc, a monster that even some S-Rank might struggle against.

He even fought through the chaos of the Final Battle against the monsters the Monarchs unleashed on the world. He’s not strong enough to actually beat top-tier threats, but his ability to survive fights that should kill him says a lot.

3. Park Jongsoo Is More Than a Physical Tank

Park Jongsoo runs the Knights Guild. As a tanker, his signature moment came when he single-handedly blocked a full-power hit from a Twin-Headed Ogre with his shield that is practically the manifestation of his magic. But what actually puts him above other A-Rank tankers is that he also keeps his entire guild running like a tight, professional unit. He’s a leader first and a wall second, and that combo makes him dangerous.

2. Ma Dongwook Could Hold His Own Against the Ant Queen

Ma Dongwook is Korea’s only active S-Rank tanker. His whole skillset revolves around Gigantification, an ability that lets him grow to roughly twice his normal size along with a matching boost in strength. He used it to physically block the Ant Queen from reaching Min Byung-Gyu during the Jeju Island Raid, one of the deadliest fights in the series.

Other S-Ranks admit he’s not the strongest of their group; in fact, as a hunter, he might be the weakest S-Rank. However, he is for sure one of the strongest tanks.

1. Thomas Andre Is the Strongest Tanker in Solo Leveling

There’s really no debate here. Thomas Andre led the Scavenger Guild and was one of the four National Level Hunters. However, Jinwoo is more of a monarch than a hunter at this point. However, he himself is a vessel for a Ruler, which makes him insanely strong.

His Spiritual Body Manifestation wraps him in golden armor that makes him almost impossible to actually hurt, and in his base form he already hits harder than most S-Ranks, once sending Jinwoo flying with a single punch. Even as a tank, most of the strongest hunters of the fighter class, S-rank or not, can’t even touch him.

Which Tank-Class Hunter do you think deserved a higher rank? Let us know in the comments.

Solo Leveling is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
