The Only 2 Roles That Fit the Henry Cavill Rumor of Him Joining Marvel’s X-Men Movie

Henry Cavill may be circling Marvel’s X-Men movie, and if the latest rumor has any meat on its bones, two characters make considerably more sense than most of the names that could be attached to the former Superman. The claim originated on X, alleging that Cavill is in the final stages of signing a multi-picture Marvel deal for a major role in the upcoming X-Men reboot. For now, that needs a giant asterisk. Marvel Studios has not announced Cavill as part of the movie, and no major Hollywood trade has confirmed that negotiations are underway.

The circulating rumor goes as far as claiming Cavill could play a “major mutant role,” but the entire claim remains unverified. With Marvel and the major trades staying quiet, several doors remain open: another Wolverine variant, a longer-term Logan, or even a supporting role in the mutant saga. What makes the idea easier to imagine is Cavill’s existing MCU connection. He already played a Wolverine variant in Deadpool & Wolverine, while Marvel has now officially begun assembling its new X-Men lineup for Jake Schreier’s movie.

So, if Marvel actually has another chair waiting for Cavill, Wolverine and Captain Britain are the two choices with the strongest arguments behind them. One follows a trail Marvel has already laid down; the other could give Cavill a fresh superhero identity with surprisingly deep X-Men roots.

Wolverine Has Already Opened the Door

Marvel would barely need to explain this one. Henry Cavill made his MCU debut in Deadpool & Wolverine as a Logan variant dubbed the “Cavillrine.”, a nickname Ryan Reynolds came up with. Shawn Levy told Variety that Cavill agreed to the cameo immediately, understanding the joke behind moving from his famous DC superhero history into a Marvel variant role. He even endured hours of smoking a real cigar while filming the appearance, with Levy later saying the actor became sick from the experience (per PEOPLE). Levy shared:

I think we all were, including poor Henry Cavill, who not only had that pumped-up muscular body but kept that cigar lit and in his mouth for the entirety of the shoot day.

Turning that cameo into something permanent would be a different kettle of fish. Hugh Jackman remains enormously associated with Logan, and Deadpool & Wolverine brought him into the MCU rather than closing the book on his version. Marvel could use Cavill as an alternate Wolverine through its multiverse machinery, but making him the reboot’s primary Logan would turn a cheeky cameo into a major casting decision. Still, if the broader rumor about Cavill joining Marvel’s X-Men movie proves accurate, Wolverine is difficult to look past.

Captain Britain Has the Smarter X-Men Link

Captain Britain sounds like the curveball until you look at the Braddock family tree. Brian Braddock is the twin brother of Betsy Braddock, better known historically as Psylocke and one of the X-Men’s prominent mutant heroes. Marvel’s official character history confirms their relationship and Brian’s extensive connections to mutant mythology. He co-founded Excalibur alongside X-Men veterans Nightcrawler, Kitty Pryde, and Rachel Summers.

Betsy herself eventually joins the X-Men and, in modern comics, even inherits the Captain Britain mantle from Brian. Brian is not generally portrayed as a mutant himself, but that does not rule him out if the broader rumor is simply that Cavill could appear in Marvel’s X-Men movie. His ties to Psylocke, Excalibur, Otherworld, and mutant mythology give Marvel a natural route to bring him into that corner of the MCU without replacing Jackman.

That possibility looks more intriguing now that Marvel’s X-Men reboot is taking tangible shape. At D23, Marvel confirmed several principal characters, including Jean Grey, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Storm, Rogue, Professor X, and Mister Sinister, with Schreier directing the film for its May 5, 2028 release.
