Slow Horses Season 6 wastes no time making Slough House personal business, with former agent Struan Loy murdered and River Cartwright marked as another target. Slow Horses Season 5 left London recovering from Farouk’s coordinated attacks, while Diana Taverner discovered that Peter Judd’s offshore accounts had helped finance the operation. The Slow Horses prevented another catastrophe, but their reward was hardly peace and quiet.
Season 6 arrives with David Cartwright dead, River grieving, and another problem already knocking at Slough House’s door. Episode 1 turns that promise into something viciously literal. Someone is killing people connected to Slough House, and Struan’s bizarre new life makes him the first casualty we see.
Struan Loy’s Killer Makes Slough House the Target
Seeing Struan again after Season 1 is almost funny until you see how lonely he’s become. The former MI5 agent teaches karate to children, lives in a converted shipping container, and dreams of making money selling similar homes. His optimism makes him vulnerable. A couple claiming to be investors gain his trust, but Struan soon wonders how they found his unadvertised business. He realizes too late that they’re killers. They beat him, trap him inside the container, and set it on fire.
Then Kay White, another former Slough House employee, is murdered by the same pair. They throw her from her houseboat and prevent her from escaping the water. Two dead former Slow Horses stop looking remotely coincidental, especially when their conversation identifies River as the next person on their list. That last detail justifies the premiere’s menace. These aren’t opportunistic murders. Someone appears to be working through Slough House personnel.
Lamb Spots What MI5 Wants to Call an Accident
Diana would prefer Struan’s death filed away as an accident, but Emma Flyte has enough sense to know Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) won’t appreciate learning about a dead former agent after the paperwork is finished. She secretly hands him the case file. Lamb and River visit Struan’s container, where the official explanation already looks flimsy. Struan has a fractured hand, which could conveniently be blamed on his karate work, yet there is no convincing reason why he couldn’t escape the burning container.
Lamb finds one. A piece of wood had been used to secure the doors from outside. Struan didn’t fail to escape; somebody made escape impossible. News of Kay’s death then gives Lamb the connection he needs. Diana may want coincidence, but Lamb knows better than to put all his eggs in that basket.
River Cartwright Has No Time to Grieve
River enters Slow Horses Season 6 carrying a loss that espionage cannot conveniently bury. David Cartwright has died following his declining health over recent seasons, leaving River without the grandfather who raised him and shaped much of his life. Diana summons River to discuss David’s funeral, but MI5 plans to preserve his Department of Transport cover while following security protocols. River resents seeing his grandfather reduced to procedure while he is still grieving.
His colleagues’ jokes about inheriting David’s fortune only make things worse, especially since most of it went toward his care. Meanwhile, River is troubled by his estranged mother Isobel, who has ignored his attempts to contact her about the funeral. River nevertheless keeps reporting to Slough House instead of taking bereavement leave. It reads less like dedication and more like a man who would rather chase anything than sit alone with his grief.
Someone Has Erased Slough House From MI5
As if unpaid wages weren’t insulting enough, Slough House has apparently ceased to exist on MI5’s system. JK Coe discovers the problem in wonderfully Slough House fashion by punching an estate agent whom he mistakes for an armed intruder. The unfortunate man is inspecting the building because its rent hasn’t been paid and official records list it as vacant.
Catherine takes the issue to Regent’s Park, where Moira Tregorian discovers that Slough House, its staff, and assets have been erased from MI5’s database on orders from senior leadership. When Lamb confronts Diana, she calls it a technical glitch but then reveals that Lamb killed Charles Partner. The revelation devastates Catherine, who is still affected by Partner’s death, and she walks away.
Peter Judd’s Money May Explain the Killings
At David’s funeral, Diana learns from Peter Judd that the offshore money she seized after Season 5 never belonged to him, but to an unnamed friend. The connection to the murders remains unclear, though the stolen fortune offers a possible motive for retaliation as Slough House is erased from MI5 records and targeted. River also gets a shock when Frank Harkness appears at the funeral. He confronts his estranged father and even climbs onto his car to stop him, but Harkness manages to escape.
With Struan and Kay dead, River identified as the killers’ next target, Isobel unreachable, Slough House erased, and Harkness back, River has inherited far more trouble than money. My suspicion is that the murders and MI5 purge share a source, while Harkness knows enough to make himself either useful or unbearable, probably both.
