Marshals: Luke Grimes Officially Opens Up About Dutton Ranch Crossover With Kelly Reilly

Luke Grimes has offered his clearest answer yet about reuniting Kayce and Beth Dutton. Fans should not expect Kelly Reilly to cross over into Marshals Season 2, but Grimes is openly interested in bringing the siblings together farther down the road. He told The Hollywood Reporter, while stressing that it probably will not happen “anytime soon.”

I don’t think anyone’s opposed to it.

His reasoning has less to do with franchise spectacle than family: Beth is Kayce’s only living relative besides Tate, so keeping the siblings apart forever would eventually become harder to explain. That makes a future crossover more than an excuse to put two Yellowstone favorites in the same frame. Kayce and Beth survived the collapse of their old family life from opposite emotional poles, and both now have shows asking what comes after the ranch stops defining them. Grimes wants those roads to meet eventually. He just wants both shows to learn how to stand alone first.

Luke Grimes’ crossover hesitation makes sense since the two Yellowstone successors are very different. Dutton Ranch continues Beth and Rip’s ranch story, while Marshals takes Kayce into procedural territory with a U.S. Marshals team. Grimes told The Hollywood Reporter:

We have to let our shows stand on their own for a while.

He has taken that separation surprisingly seriously. Grimes admitted he hasn’t watched Dutton Ranch because doing so while establishing Marshals might interfere with the tone he is trying to build around Kayce. Dutton Ranch, he says, was effectively designed as “season six of Yellowstone with who is left,” whereas Marshals had to overhaul the formula for CBS, including its pace, procedural structure, and expanded 20-episode second season.

FandomWire’s Dutton Ranch review reaches a similar conclusion from the other side, praising Reilly and Cole Hauser’s series for retaining Yellowstone’s neo-Western atmosphere. Its Marshals Season 2 review, meanwhile, describes Grimes’ show as essentially a procedural in cowboy clothing, with Kayce providing the emotional bridge to Sheridan’s original world. That separation could make a future crossover more rewarding, since Beth visiting Kayce would mean more after both have built lives beyond the Yellowstone ranch.

Luke Grimes may be keeping Beth at arm’s length for now, but Season 2 is hardly severing Kayce’s old ties. Jefferson White is officially returning as Jimmy Hurdstrom in a recurring role. CBS describes Jimmy as the former troubled ranch hand who evolved into a resilient cowboy, while CBS’s official announcement confirms White’s comeback. The reunion actually started with Grimes. He and showrunner Spencer Hudnut agreed Jimmy was the natural Yellowstone character to bring back. Once the 6666 spinoff fell through, Grimes called White, who jumped at the chance, and Sheridan gave his blessing.

Jimmy will arrive at an opportune time. Kayce is struggling to balance East Camp with his increasingly demanding Marshal duties, so Jimmy comes to help maintain the land out of gratitude for how the Dutton family changed his life. For Grimes, filming with White “really feels like we’re shooting Yellowstone again.” Jimmy also proves his crossover rule can work: bring familiar faces back when they fit naturally into Kayce’s new life.

Monica represents another door that remains slightly ajar. Grimes says he would personally “love” for Kelsey Asbille to return through flashbacks, although the two have not discussed it and he suspects she may feel finished with that chapter. Kayce certainly isn’t finished with Monica. Grimes confirms that deep into Season 2, Kayce still wears his wedding ring, describing their relationship as a Romeo and Juliet-like romance whose loss will always remain part of him.

All of which makes Beth the elephant in the Montana wilderness. Should Beth visit Kayce on Marshals, or should Grimes ride into Dutton Ranch for the reunion? And how long should both shows wait before finally putting the siblings together?
