Damn You Eiichiro Oda: The One Piece Time Loop Theory Revealing Why Roger Was Laughing Before Death is Absolute Peak
Undeniably, the biggest mysteries of One Piece is the titular treasure and the nature of its location, Laugh Tale. When Gol D. Roger landed on the island, all we know is that he laughed and it was a legendary frame. Many theories surround the nature of this scene and what it could’ve possibly revealed about the One Piece to the Roger Pirates. One of the theories is quite a stretch but considering how eccentric and convoluted One Piece can be, it’s not impossible.
Sometimes, fans of One Piece make the most outlandish theories but this theory is something else. This theory suggests that One Piece is a time portal or machine that will send Luffy and Robin back to the Void Century to become the Joy Boy we hear of while Robin writes the Poneglyphs that talk about his adventures and the Secret History. There are several holes in this theory but this could potentially explain why Gol D. Roger laughed.
The One Piece Time Loop: How Would Gol D. Roger Know Though?
One of the theories is that the One Piece creates a time loop that only Luffy and Robin can access, to become the next Joy Boy and the creator of the Poneglyphs. This theory is only supported by the fact that Laugh Tale only appears at certain points in time, so the timing does have to be right to get there. This would mean the Straw Hat has been passed down from Luffy to, well, Luffy. However, nothing written by Eiichiro Oda suggests this but let’s humor it. Why couldn’t Gol D. Roger access it?
The legendary Pirate King is solely known through stories and different perspectives. But one thing we know for certain is that he simply laughed when he reached Laugh Tale and found the One Piece. They definitely did discover something there, since Silvers Rayleigh outright admitted to knowing about the Secret History. We also know the crew were “too early” but what does this mean?
The time loop theory would prove that the One Piece can only be accessed when Nika is active and Luffy was the next version of him after Joy Boy, although now more “Sun Gods” have emerged. However, without him eating the fruit, going to Laugh Tale was a waste, because as it turns out, only Joy Boy himself can do it. This could be why Gol D. Roger laughed, perhaps from the frustration that Joy Boy hasn’t come back yet.
Could This One Piece Theory Be True?
While this theory is certainly interesting, it doesn’t make sense with some of the hints we have about Joy Boy. One hint is that Joy Boy was perhaps a giant from Elbaf, which is what the huge Straw Hat in Imu’s possession is. Unless Luffy grew tremendously, it doesn’t make sense that the Joy Boy from 800 years ago is the same young boy we know and love.
Moreover, this being the ending of One Piece would be incredibly disappointing. Being stuck in the past is not the message of One Piece. Unless this time loop theory suggests Luffy might go back in time to correct history, it is rather bizarre. There are several other reasons why Gol D. Roger was laughing and it might be something simple rather than a time loop.
