Shojo Fans Cannot Skip ‘Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku’ With High-School Romances Getting Way Too Repetitive
Shounen anime might be the reigning king of the anime world at the moment, but the Shoujo genre is not too far behind. Every new anime season sees the debut of several high school romance series, but very few can beat Wotakoi: Love is Hard for an Otaku.
Wotakoi shows up in every Top 10 list of romance anime despite being six years old. Thanks to its blend of romance, comedy, and slice of life, the anime is hard to forget. Add to that its evergreen theme of otakus and office love, and you have a winning recipe.
In the World of High School Romances, Wotakoi Manages to Stand Out
The anime industry is obsessed with high school romances. From Me to You, Horimiya, Kaguya-sama, My Love Story, and Oregairu, are all extremely famous high school romances. In fact, every anime season is bound to feature a few high school fling anime, but even amongst these, Wotakoi: Love is Hard for an Otaku manages to stand out.
But why is it so? Is it the extremely relatable characters? The insanely funny comedy scenes? The realistic office life depiction? Or the struggles of being an otaku? You guessed it right; it’s a combination of all these features that makes Wotakoi an evergreen romance anime. As for the characters, you have two pairs of love birds who are also die-hard otakus.
Narumi Momose is a fujoshi who wants to keep her interests a secret and will erase anybody who brings them up. Hirotaka Nifuji is a gamer who, unlike Narumi, does not care if anyone knows about his hobbies. Hanako Koyanagi is another otaku who acts prim and proper at work but has a devilish side to her. Of course, you can’t forget Taro Kabakure, a bishoujo anime lover who acts coldhearted but has a bubbly side to him.
Why is Wotakoi Such a Refreshing Romance Anime?
Wotakoi isn’t about kawai girls who blush at every turn or boys who are too dense to pick up romantic hints. The series revolves around the life of a couple of adults, which automatically makes it more mature. No, their relationships aren’t just about physical attraction because there are genuine moments of slow love in the anime. The difference is that the characters don’t act like children and have adult problems in life.
There are no multiple love interests for a single character or cliched dialogues that begin and end with ‘senpai.’ The feelings are genuine, and the dialogues are relatable while keeping everything lighthearted and interesting. The anime is not set in classrooms, playgrounds, rooftops, or the road to and from school but in the office cells, bars, and independent apartments of the characters. For once, it’s nice to see a change of place as well as mannerisms.
Now, let’s get to the comedy part of the series. There are no forced jokes or situations, and the comedy is very natural. The characters aren’t reckless teenagers, so every decision is relatable, with a sprinkle of their quirkiness. Even if you watched the series as a teenager and are now an adult, Wotakoi is an anime that will still make you laugh and relate to it. The cherry on top is obviously its super popular opening theme, Fiction. (Feel free to give in and hum the song now.)
