This is better than the Jon Snow Spinoff – Maisie Williams Expected to Return to Game of Thrones Universe Thanks to George R.R. Martin
When it comes to Game of Thrones, there’s a huge fanbase just waiting for more from that universe. With House of the Dragon, the story of Westeros is back in full swing, winning over not only the original audience from 2011 to 2019 but also bringing in a whole new generation of fans.
And while characters like Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen are some of the most memorable, there’s one who’s truly won over the hearts of fans. After a journey of growth and self-discovery, Arya Stark’s story wrapped up with an open ending, hinting that she’d keep exploring the unknown. With so many new projects in the GOT universe, could she make a return? That just might be part of George R. R. Martin’s plan.
Maisie Williams Recently Met With George R. R. Martin
One of the characters most beloved by fans was young Arya Stark. Her journey in Game of Thrones — despite a few choices fans felt were missteps — was one of the best in the series.
In the final season, Arya was a bit of a surprise when she didn’t go after Daenerys following the King’s Landing massacre. However, she left behind something that now seems like it might be exactly what George R. R. Martin is looking to build on.
Everything’s still pretty uncertain, but Arya’s choice to become an explorer and sail west of Westeros to unknown lands could be the reason behind a recent meeting between Martin and Maisie Williams. Yesterday (10), he posted on his well-known blog about his trip to London in August and mentioned catching up with the actress over a meal:
We also got together with Maisie Williams for pizza and pasta, and talked about… well, no, better not get into that, do not want to jinx it . But it could be so much fun.
This was enough to spark theories, especially since the author is involved in several projects related to the Game of Thrones universe. The show’s success was so massive worldwide that it led to several spin-offs beyond House of the Dragon, including Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and Aegon’s Conquest — projects that are still in the works.
But could Williams be returning to the role of Arya, or is Martin possibly considering casting the actress in something else, like Dark Winds or In the Lost Lands? These are two projects that aren’t part of the Game of Thrones saga.
Apart from that, the idea of a spin-off centered on Arya is still on the table. With her open-ended departure, it could be the perfect opportunity to follow her travels after leaving Westeros. A Jon Snow spin-off was in the works but was eventually canceled. The truth is, a story about his sister might even be more interesting to produce.
Maisie Williams Says She Felt Lost After Game of Thrones
As well as being the most-watched series in the world, GOT was also a major milestone in Williams’ life, marking her first big role as Arya. However, after the show ended, the actress’ career didn’t take off as expected.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, she admitted feeling a bit out of place and aimless after 2019. After years of playing the same character, Williams shared that she struggled to find herself as a person and to feel comfortable in her own skin:
I was so lost for so long and I knew that I was, and when I couldn’t pin down what I felt my identity was within that, it brought me a lot of discomfort. It’s hard to even put myself back there and talk about how tough it was just because I think it’s done.
The fact that she essentially spent her entire growing-up years working on the same project meant she was closely tied to a personality that wasn’t truly hers. Williams’ childhood and adolescence were so intertwined with Arya that it makes sense she found it difficult to return to her life after the show ended.
It was at its absolute worst when I also was the most out of touch with myself — not knowing your identity and that kind of thing — I think rejection at that point felt so personal, so painful. I’d solely compare myself to other actresses, and the way people looked, and all of the most destructive ways that you can compare yourself.
The actress has been involved in a few projects over the years, like The New Mutants in 2020, but nothing that made a huge impact. Maybe that will change now, and perhaps her reunion with Martin will finally lead to something significant for her career.
