“Shame it never happened”: Trailer For Cancelled James Bond LEGO Dimensions Level Pack Leaves Fans Heartbroken Especially After Being Replaced by Mission Impossible

A leaked trailer for a canceled LEGO James Bond game was leaked on November 26. This scrapped project was reportedly pitched as a standalone title during LEGO Dimensions’ final development year in 2016. It would have featured iconic moments from the Bond franchise recreated in the signature LEGO style.

The project was shelved due to concerns about James Bond’s mature themes conflicting with LEGO’s family-friendly image. It eventually got replaced by the Mission Impossible Level Pack in LEGO Dimensions. After the leak, fans have just been left thinking what could’ve been. It would’ve been blocky brilliance.

James Bond Could’ve Given Us a Real LEGO Adventure

The trailer, uploaded by Reddit user Kecskecske6, features recreated scenes from classics such as Casino Royale, Live and Let Die, and GoldenEye. It even humorously adapts the iconic gun barrel sequence, with LEGO characters filling the roles of various Bonds across decades.

According to a comment by Redditor LEGOGameMuseum, TT Games had pitched this as a standalone project in 2016 during LEGO Dimensions’ final year. However, the LEGO Group deemed James Bond’s mature themes incompatible with the brand’s family-friendly image, shelving the idea entirely.

This isn’t the first time James Bond has been considered for LEGO adaptation. According to Comicbook, a similar pitch was rejected back in 2005 for the same reasons. While there were eventual James Bond themed LEGO physical sets, a video game adaptation never happened.

As one fan noted, it’s such a shame. The trailer had great attention to detail, including character models that mirrored the unique appearances of different Bonds. For example, Daniel Craig’s version stood out with his trademark blond hair, while other Bonds retained their darker locks.

The project’s vision included covering multiple eras of the franchise, offering an homage to James Bond’s cinematic legacy with LEGO’s signature slapstick humor.

The LEGO gaming franchise is known for its humorous and accessible adaptations of beloved properties. And this adaptation could have easily introduced Bond to a younger audience while satisfying long-time fans.

The Mission Impossible level pack that replaced it wasn’t bad by any means, but fans would’ve enjoyed a James Bond project more. Players got to experience scenes from the 1996 hit such as the CIA infiltration and also scenes from Mission Impossible 2 like the iconic car chase between Ethan Hunt and Nyah Nordoff-Hall.

Since the company’s establishment in 2005, TT Games has made many hits that have successfully adapted franchises like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Harry Potter. The most recent success was 2022’s LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

Despite the missed opportunity, there is some hope for Bond fans. Hitman developer IO Interactive is working on a brand-new James Bond game. There are little details for this project but fans can only hope that it scratches the itch for a good Bond video game experience.
