Julie Bowen: “You guys keep calling me in and staring at my big giant stomach” on Being Convinced ‘Modern Family’ Didn’t Want Her as Claire Dunphy

Actress Julie Bowen is best known for her role as Claire Dunphy in Modern Family. She performed as the character for eleven seasons and even won two Emmys for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in the sitcom. However, the actress revealed that she never thought she was funny.

The actress revealed in an interview that she was initially apprehensive about auditioning for comedic roles as she felt that she could never deliver on jokes. She also reportedly urged her agents not to send her to comedy auditions but they did not pay heed, debating that she was funny in a different way. She said she did not think Modern Family wanted her.

Julie Bowen felt she was not funny enough for sitcoms like Modern Family

Without Claire, the Dunphy house would be in ruins. Julie Bowen’s incredible performance as the fastidious yet short-tempered Claire was one of the highlights of Modern Family. Though the actress did not have any crazy one-liners like Mitchell and Cameron, or Alex and Lily for that matter, her physical comedy and expressions were enough.

However, Bowen was reportedly convinced that she was not funny and was surprised when her agents would send her in for auditions for sitcoms. The actress had already been a part of shows like ER, Ed, Boston Legal, Monk, Jake in Progress, and Lost before she got the part of Claire in Modern Family.

Talking to Andy Richter on the Three Questions podcast, Bowen spoke about how she could not understand why her agents would send her for comedy auditions. She said,

They sent me out on comedy auditions. I was like, ‘I can’t tell a joke, I’m not funny — don’t give me those three-jokes-a-page kind of things. I couldn’t do them.’ And my managers were always very supportive, like, ‘You know what? Helen Hunt isn’t funny.’ I go, ‘What?’ They’re like, ‘Not technically.’

Bowen also mentioned that she felt she was better in shows like Ed, where there was a mix of drama and comedy as opposed to a complete sitcom.

Much like her character Claire, Julie Bowen reportedly also has three children, albeit all three are sons. The actress was reportedly pregnant with her twins when she was shooting the pilot for Modern Family, with her baby bump being cleverly concealed while filming with props and loose clothing.

Bowen mentioned that she did not imagine that the makers of Modern Family would call her back for the role as she was pregnant even during the audition. She mentioned that she was also trying out for another pilot where the character was pregnant and she would have preferred that. She said,

I was like, ‘I’ve got a shot at that one. I’m never going to get Modern Family. You guys keep calling me in and staring at my big giant stomach’. So I said, ‘I need the job.’ Like you need the job that’s going to pay the bills, that’s got legs.

However, the selection turned out to be the one that paid the bills for Bowen, and boy, did it work out all too well with that.

Modern Family is available to stream on Hulu.
