“The IP milking begins right after”: With or Without Denis Villeneuve, Warner Bros. Will Not End Its New Cash Cow Dune With Dune: Messiah (Report)

Dune has seen the face of tremendous success with its releases, and now a third film is on the horizon. Denis Villeneuve, the director behind the first two blockbuster films, has recently stated that he might not be continuing with the franchise beyond a third film.
However, discussions surrounding a potential fourth installment are already taking place. Given the impressive box office numbers and overall reception the films have garnered, it’s pretty clear why Warner Bros. is so eager to explore further expansion.
Denis Villeneuve will not be returning to the Dune saga after Dune: Messiah!
2024 has been a fantastic year for cinema, with blockbuster releases like Inside Out 2, Deadpool and Wolverine, and many more. Among them, the release of Dune 2 has been a major highlight. Fans, whether they’re devoted to the books, captivated by the universe after the first film, or simply just Zendaya fans, have been eagerly waiting for the sequel.
The anticipation paid off, as the film proved to be a blockbuster. Paul Atreides’ speech stands out as one of the top moments of 2024, showcasing some of the finest performances audiences have seen from Timothée Chalamet.
Additionally, Dune: Messiah, based on the novel of the same name by Frank Herbert, is currently full steam ahead. Denis Villeneuve has time and again expressed his enthusiasm for making a third film. However, for fans, there’s bittersweet news as this could potentially be the final Dune film directed by Villeneuve. As he has confirmed to Time Magazine,
’Dune Messiah’ should be the last ‘Dune’ movie for me.
However, that doesn’t mean the end of the franchise altogether. New reports have surfaced suggesting that, whether with Denis Villeneuve or not, Warner Bros. intends to further expand the franchise, with a fourth installment already in discussions. However, fans are not taking this news well.
Warner Bros. has plans for a Dune 4!
Denis Villeneuve hasn’t even begun shooting Dune Messiah yet, but Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are already planning to milk the franchise dry. Scooper Daniel Richtman (via his Patreon) has hinted at potential expansions, including a “new show and a fourth movie“
According to World of Reel, Villeneuve is reportedly “irked” by these plans, whether he’s involved or not. With heavy rumors suggesting Dune 4 is happening, and considering the source material, the franchise could continue even beyond a fourth film. Fans aren’t too happy about it either!
Here is what fans have to say,
Hope Messiah is good bc the IP milking begins right after https://t.co/O8JcD4AH91

As soon as they start pushing Brian Herbert’s storylines the watering down of the original begins
i will just not acknowledge the show or the non denis movies, just like the books from his son

Making anything outside of the first book is already milking the IP. Might as well adapt god Emperor

Although nothing has been officially confirmed, and no official statements have been made regarding the future of Dune 4, it appears highly likely. With ongoing discussions and rumors circulating, it seems Warner Bros. and Legendary are interested in expanding the franchise further and why won’t they be? Given the success of previous films and the wealth of source material, it wouldn’t be surprising if a fourth installment eventually takes shape.
Both the Dune films are available to stream on Max.
