“Fired for being Jewish”: The Woman Behind Miss Minutes From Loki and Why She Was Fired Before MCU Fame

The Marvel actress who played Miss Minutes in Loki turned 52 on February 13, Thursday. Tara Strong, the Canadian actress, is known for her voice roles in the industry and has voiced Raven in Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go!. Strong was at the center of controversy in October 2023, when she was fired from her show Boxtown for her controversial political statements.
While her statement came a little late for Marvel to take any action against her as the second season of the series aired a month after Strong’s controversial statements. She had a role in last year’s hit animated film Despicable Me 4, voicing the character of Gru Jr.
Loki actress Tara Strong was fired from her show for controversial remarks
Animated web series Boxtown dropped Tara Strong from its voice cast over her comments on the Israel-Palestine conflict in October 2023. After the attack on Israel on October 7, Strong reportedly liked a tweet that was deemed Islamophobic. Strong later claimed that she didn’t read the tweet in its entirety and understood that it was an awful take (via @tarastrong/X).
However, she also tweeted controversial remarks on her account. She reportedly wrote regarding Israel’s counter-attack, “They were smart to start with a country people love to hate.” The comments were too much for Bandit Mill Animation, the independent studio behind Boxtown, who removed Strong from their cast.

They announced via X that they would recast the role of Bill, the main character previously played by Strong. Sarah Lew later took on the role in the series. While Boxtown didn’t offer any explanation about why they fired Strong, she commented on the post and shared that she wasn’t informed of the decision beforehand. She claimed that she was fired for being Jewish in her tweet:
Just found out on twitter! This is what happens when you help fans get shows made I guess. Fired for being Jewish. Glad I helped you get your kickstarter money. Please lose my email address & pray for my family in Israel and in Gaza. & #prayforpeace.

However, the co-writer of the pilot of Boxtown, Spencer Rothbell, rejected Strong’s claims in a tweet. He shared that he and the actor playing one of the lead characters, Alex Hirsch, were both Jewish, indicating that Strong’s ethnicity had nothing to do with her firing. Boxtown later clarified the circumstances surrounding her firing. They shared (via X):
This decision was due to a trend among Tara’s recent online activity, including posts that promote controversial messages regarding the peoples of Palestine currently being affected by the ongoing Israel-Palestine crisis.
We believe that our public platform gives us a duty to be careful when it comes to hateful messages and misinformation online. This extends to our cast and crew. This was not a difficult decision.
Strong also allegedly opposed any pro-Palestine movements on social media. She allegedly liked and retweeted posts that were critical of such movements in various parts of the world.
Tara Strong played Miss Minutes in Loki
Miss Minutes is the anthropomorphic AI clock mascot of the Time Variance Authority. It was created by He Who Remains. In the two seasons of Loki, the character was voiced by Tara Strong with a Southern drawl. The accent was inspired by Michael Waldron, the writer of the show, who is from the Southern United States.
Strong also played another character in the MCU last year. Miley Cyrus voiced the role of Mainframe, an AI that served as a Ravager in Sylvester Stallone’s Stakar Ogord’s team, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However, Cyrus was unable to reprise the role in the third film and Strong replaced her as the voice of Mainframe.
