One Piece Foreshadowing From 1998: You Will Believe Eiichiro Oda Can See Into the Future Once You Learn About This

Eiichiro Oda might be the most meticulous writer in the manga industry. Details that are easily forgettable can become the key to solving the biggest mystery later on. For example, Joy Boy was foreshadowed for the longest time, right under our noses. What else has he hidden in One Piece?
So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that one of the earliest arcs in One Piece, the Orange Town Arc, had valuable information that would come back in chapter 1138. It also involves a character who you would never give even a second thought.
If you remember Cabaji and Mohji of the Buggy Pirates, your memory must be impeccable. Mohji’s pet lion, Richie, is even more forgettable. However, Eiichiro Oda decided otherwise. One Piece is truly something else, hiding information in the most useless characters.
Richie, the pet lion, already showed us a part of the mural from chapter 1138
Believe it or not, Richie had dreamed of a part of the mural back in 1998 on the cover page for chapter 59 of One Piece. It depicts the lion dreaming of him as the captain and fighting a dragon while he sleeps under a half-moon shaped like a D.
It didn’t seem like a lot back then, but bears too much significance now. The lion is even holding a sword and shield wearing the symbol of the sun. It mirrors what we see Sun God Nika or Joy Boy doing on Elbaph’s Ancient Mural in chapter 1138, one of the most vital pieces of lore we’ve been given.
If you’re caught up with One Piece’s manga, you should know why this is shocking. However, for a writer like Eiichiro Oda who loves foreshadowing as a narrative tool, it’s not surprising. It’s just funny he chose to hide it in a character like Richie, and not someone more memorable.
It’s likely the mural is retelling the Void Century’s Great War. It shows Joy Boy leading the battle against Imu with the Great Kingdom on his side.
The fact that Richie’s vivid dream in 1998 foreshadowed his actions is bizarre. But perhaps it’s more crazy that One Piece fans made the connection. Oda must’ve been waiting 20 years for someone to recognize it.
What else could Oda be hiding from us in the mural?
The most obvious foreshadowing is Franky’s new appearance in the Elbaph Arc. He’s a lot more robot-like after the time skip but with the horns, he looks scarily similar to Emet, Joy Boy’s friend from the Void Century. It has fans questioning whether it’s intentional or a coincidence.
Franky might be the new Emet, for all we know, but does that mean there’s another version of Zunesha around? Probably not and Franky’s coincidence doesn’t mean every crew member is the second coming of Joy Boy’s friends.
However, what does the mural mean in One Piece? It’s foreshadowing an all-out war, with Luffy leading it this time, and warning them of previous attempts. Will the Final War be worse than the Great War?
