Taylor Sheridan co-created Yellowstone, a Western drama series following the Dutton family and their fight to preserve their ancestral ranch. In the series, the Duttons are forced to commit morally questionable actions in their bid to save their land, which Sheridan intended to make the character more complex.
During an interview with Variety, Sheridan talked about his approach to writing characters and admitted that he did not like to classify them as textbook heroes or villains. Instead, the showrunner stated:
I don’t like my good guys to be all that good, and I don’t like my bad guys to be all that bad, even though they may do really bad things. And I think that makes them relatable.
Sheridan added that he liked the notion of questioning what makes a protagonist, which allowed him to make his heroes flawed.
Furthermore, the showrunner explained that he likes challenging his characters’ moral and ethical actions, adding a layer of complexity while keeping them human and relatable for viewers. As a result, it is no surprise that the earlier seasons of Yellowstone connected with viewers because of their character writing.

The fifth season sees Jamie turn heel and go against his adoptive father John Dutton, before he is eventually killed off in the series finale. However, fans were outraged over Sheridan’s treatment of Jamie, arguing that he was no different from the other Duttons, who committed equally, if not more, heinous crimes compared to him.
Sheridan’s comments about his writing style suggest that viewers were meant to have some empathy for Jamie and the character was meant to provide a parallel to the main character, Kevin Costner’s John Dutton. As a result, it can be argued that while John’s morally ambiguous actions were justified by his cause, Jamie’s were selfish, which makes him the villain.
