Oscar Winner Mikey Madison Won’t Say Yes to a Movie if She Will Be Just a Body to Help Male Actor’s Storyline
Mikey Madison landed a huge career milestone at the 2025 Academy Awards by winning her first-ever Oscar for Best Actress for the romantic comedy-drama Anora. And her victory seemed to be the well-earned result of her meticulous approach to choosing roles, something she had previously spoken about.
Before making a major breakthrough with the 2024 Oscar-winning movie Anora, Madison previously expressed her disdain for shallow female roles in male-led stories that offer little to no meaningful contribution to the narrative.
Mikey Madison revealed the type of roles she would never accept
Initially gaining recognition through the FX comedy series Better Things, Mikey Madison has continued to make notable appearances in films like Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and Scream before her breakthrough in the Oscar-winning film, Anora.
However, when asked about the type of characters she would refrain from playing, the actress expressed her disdain for roles that serve merely as plot devices to enhance a male-led story.
“I’ve read scripts before where the female character is just a body to help the male character’s storyline,” she told C-Heads Magazine in a 2018 interview, revealing that such roles don’t “interest me in anyway.”
Madison also recalled her experience with one such offer, saying,
I read this script a year ago it was a pretty big script, a nice Indie film, had a lot of money backing it. The character in it that they wanted me to play didn’t even have a name. She was also only in the first fifteen pages and in those pages was already naked, had a s*x scene and no lines.
“It just made no sense, just was meat to propel this story forward,” she continued before noting that a strong storyline and well-developed characters are essential for her when choosing a role.
Mikey Madison expressed her desire for more female-driven stories
Further in her conversation, Mikey Madison also revealed that the storyline and the people involved in the project serve as a key factor for her in choosing a role rather than the paycheck.
“The scripts I choose are always all about storyline and the people behind it,” she said. Madison also explained that it has been the reason why she often gravitates toward independent films, as they offer deeper and more meaningful stories.
It’s more if I read a story and it moves me and I almost feel protective over the character — I’ve mostly done independent films, I think it’s because most of the stories I gravitate toward are not really big studio budget stories.
The actress further clarified that though she has no issues with the male lead movies, she also expressed, “it would be interesting if there were more female-driven stories” out of the male gaze.
And her commitment to strong storytelling paid off, as she took on the lead role in Anora, an Oscar-winning film about a young sex worker who finds herself caught between love and power after marrying the son of a wealthy Russian oligarch.
Starring alongside Mark Eidelstein, Mikey Madsion won the Oscar for Best Actress at the 2025 Academy Awards for her performance in the movie, which has continued to make waves since its premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
In addition to her Best Actress win, Anora dominated the 97th Academy Awards, taking home five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Editing, and Best Original Screenplay.
