The Odyssey: Robert Downey Jr. Might Just Have Said No to His 2nd Oscar for Avengers: Doomsday

Robert Downey Jr. is one of the most prolific actors of his generation and finally took home the prestigious Golden trophy home last year thanks to Christopher Nolan. After his feat in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ‘temporarily’ ended, the actor gave his career best performance in Nolan’s Oscar-winning Oppenheimer.

The unexpected collaboration resulted in something extraordinary that will continue to be celebrated for years to come. Despite this, Downey seems to have lost his second chance to win an Oscar as he reportedly declined to star in Nolan’s The Odyssey.

Christopher Nolan is one of the greatest filmmakers to have ever been born. Having made several films across different genres, Nolan’s movies usually end up being leading contenders at awards or, if not, end up garnering extreme critical praise from critics and audiences worldwide.

His 2023 epic, Oppenheimer was one such film that is now hailed as one of the greatest films ever to have been made. While the film took home several awards and Oscars, it also led to Robert Downey Jr. winning his first Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, after having lost the chance twice in the past.

Despite Nolan’s acclaim and the success of their collaboration, Downey has reportedly declined to star in the filmmaker’s upcoming epic, The Odyssey. According to the industry insider @DanielRPK, the Marvel star was reportedly offered the role of Poseidon but since he is busy filming his next run in the MCU, Avengers: Doomsday, he had to say no.

Well, while it is unfortunate to know that we lost a chance to see the two legends reubite, one can’t help but think that RDJ might have well lost his chance to win a second Oscar.

Robert Downey Jr. and Christopher Nolan’s collaboration was a success in every way. Whether it was critical acclaim and rave reviews or the awards season, Oppenheimer certainly is one of the greatest film ever to have been made. Naturally after all this success, many fans expected Downey to collaborate with Nolan again sometime in the future.

But since he has been busy in the MCU, the actor had to reportedly decline starring in The Odyssey. After this news went viral, this is what fans had to say about it:

As fans lament the loss of seeing Downey in a Christopher Nolan film once again, Downey is busy saving the MCU with his next role of Doctor Doom. Meanwhile, The Odyssey already has an ensemble cast with Marvel star Tom Holland in the lead and follows Odysseus in his perilous journey home after the Trojan War, showcasing his encounters with Polyphemus, the Sirens, Circe, and finishing with his reunion with his wife, Penelope (via IMDb).

The Odyssey is set to hit theatres on July 17, 2026.
