You Can’t Miss ‘The Barbarian’s Bride’ With How Rarely We Get Shojo Anime for Adults

In the world of Shojo anime youthful protagonists often get the spotlight, and their romances are restricted to the confines of their school. The story is predictable and it generally ends with both the leads falling in love and living happily ever after.

But what if we were to tell you that there exists an anomaly in the genre that truly twists the conventional tropes of Shojo to present a complex love story set in a fantasy setting? This is The Barbarian’s Bride and here is why you shouldn’t miss it.

When wars are fought, several soldiers are killed and the victor often captures the opposing soldiers as prisoners of war, who will then serve the victor as slaves. This was the fate Seraphina de Lavillant thought she would be subjected to.

The strongest female warrior of the West feared for her fate when she was captured by the barbarians after she lost to them during her expedition.

While she expected that she’d be tortured or subjected to slavery, what was to come was far scarier. She was to become the bride of Lord Veor, the Grand Tribal Chief of the Barbarians.

This is the central plot of The Barbarian’s Bride, and while it may seem simple, the truth couldn’t be further away.

The Barbarian’s Bride is a mature story that navigates delicate issues like the aftereffects of war, how two opposing countries view each other, and how trusting a stranger requires more courage than fighting a war.

The manga was critically acclaimed after its release and was a breath of fresh air to the people who were tired of the generic “high school sweethearts” storyline.

The announcement of the anime for The Barbarian’s Bride has taken several people by surprise, who were not expecting the series to receive an adaptation. People on social media are commenting about how the story is very cutesy at times but can get quite mature and serious when necessary.

According to reports, Studio Jumondo seems to be handling The Barbarian’s Bride’s adaptation and netizens have noted that the studio is notorious for turning in rough work at times.

Why is ‘The Barbarian’s Bride’ special?

What sets The Barbarian’s Bride apart from other Shojo anime is its approach to storytelling. The story clearly shows the difference between the cultures of Veor and Seraphina and while both the cultures are compared, none are insulted.

The story makes it clear that love isn’t an emotion that appears out of the blue. It is a feeling that builds up within one through several experiences.

Seraphina is a great lead. She is a fearless warrior who seldom backs down from a challenge. But at the same time, she can also be a little clumsy and scared.

Similarly, Vero, while being a fearless and ruthless barbarian leader, is quite enigmatic and understanding.

One of the strong points of The Barbarian’s Bride is its story. The unique story allows it to explore topics like trust and forgiveness on a much deeper level than the other Shojo stories.

Seraphina is the perfect example of this. She is a knight who is supposed to marry a barbarian, someone who she has been taught to treat as an enemy for her whole life.

The Barbarian’s Bride is a reimagining of the Shojo genre that breaks the conventional rules of romance anime and shows the journey of a brave knight who now has to walk an unpredictable path. The series is very rich in storytelling and is a much-needed change from the classic Shojo stories.
