‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ Voice Actor Admits Production Team Was “Cruel” for Including One Bittersweet Scene

What Jujutsu Kaisen really hooks you on isn’t only through studio MAPPA’s insane animation; that may be part of the whole experience, but the real deal is its lovable cast of characters. There’s a sense of familiarity you feel as you get to know more about the characters, so it hits equally hard when the said characters get some emotional scenes.

However, the anime, both Season 1 and Season 2, doesn’t have that many melancholic character moments. So, of course, it’s better to say we needed more. Some fans even argue that we got so few of these slice-of-life moments, even though the potential was right there all along. In fact, its latest Hidden Inventory / Premature Death: The Movie further proves how the actual series could do much better if we had scenes like this.

Geto’s Japanese VA satirically complemented one particular scene from the movie

While fans wait with bated breath for the release of Jujutsu Kaisen: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death: The Movie, there’s one hot-off-the-press news that broke out from a Japanese news website, Gamer. In an interview with them, Geto’s Japanese Voice Actor, Takahiro Sakurai, casually mentioned how the production team was so brutal for including one particular scene in the movie.

I thought the production team was really cruel for creating such an emotional scene (laughs).

Though he immediately laughed after saying it, this did give us a glimpse into the passion that went into crafting the movie. But what was the scene even about?

According to Sakurai, the movie includes a new scene, similar to the “Juju strolls” we are so familiar with in the series. The scene plays out as Gojo, Geto, and their friend Shoko watch a movie together. It gave us a sense of getting a peek into their younger days. So, along with Sakurai, fans would also love to have such scenes more in the anime.

These are the kind of moments that make Jujutsu Kaisen deserving of the praise

Initially, the storyline may come off as another typical shonen series; in fact, it may actually be one to begin with. Still, there’s something that hits differently about Jujutsu Kaisen. The setting of the series in modern Tokyo/Shinjuku cities of Japan makes it all the more believable and relatable.

Like slice-of-life shows, having places we know in real life included in such a heavy action shonen series really does provide a better result for the overall viewing experience. Now, all that mixed with the critically well-written characters, the payoff at the end of the movie with “Juju Strolls” made the scene even more impactful.

It spoke of a “what if,” an unachievable direction not many series dare to take in a story so dark and gritty. It gave us a sense of a happy ending that doesn’t feel like a happy ending. It’s as if the war was won, but at what cost? Now, with Season 3 on the horizon, fans are wishing they get blessed with more such scenes in the anime.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death – The Movie is coming to theatres on July 16. The anime, however, is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
