Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece has been going on for almost thirty years, but there are still quite a lot of mysteries that he has yet to solve within the story. From Joy Boy’s identity to the contents of the One Piece treasure, every hidden element in the narrative holds some kind of significance that could bring a dramatic twist to the plot. However, considering the story is in the second phase of the final saga, it is safe to assume that Oda doesn’t have a lot of time.
Thus, here is a list of every One Piece mystery that the manga creator has yet to reveal within the story. It is specifically ranked from least to most central to the main plot, giving a brief idea of how important every mystery is and whether they will serve as a gigantic twist or simply bring a new understanding to the characters and other elements.
30. Luffy Calling Blackbeard They
During the Jaya Arc, when Luffy first met Blackbeard, it marked the beginning of a rivalry between the two One Piece characters, which grew even bigger as the story moved forward. However, one thing that kept bugging a lot of One Piece fans is how Luffy and Zoro called Blackbeard they instead of he, which sparked a lot of speculations.
Initially, it was believed that Luffy was referring to the rest of Blackbeard’s crewmates. But when he somehow possessed the power of two Devil Fruits, fans started to assume that maybe Blackbeard has more than one personality, and it was sensed by Luffy. Thus, to this day, it remains a big mystery that could bring a big change to Blackbeard’s character.
29. The 20 Kingdoms
The World Nobles, or the Celestial Dragons, are formed from the first 20 families that came together and revolted against the Ancient Kingdom. They are also known as the creators, but the only families known out of the twenty are the Nefertari Family, the Nerona Family (Imu), and the Donquixote Family (Doflamingo).
The enigma around these kingdoms is significant to the story, and thus, fans are eager to know more about them. Their origins and their actions will most likely be tied to the revelation of the Ancient Kingdom, as its defeat is directly linked to their origins as creators.
28. Luffy Destroying the Fish-Man Island
During the Fish-Man Island arc, Madam Shyarly prophesied that someone bearing a straw hat would destroy the island for an unknown reason. As Luffy is the current bearer of the straw hat, it was automatically assumed that he would be the one who would destroy the home of the fish-men and merfolk, for an unknown reason.
This mystery led to plenty of theories and speculations about why Luffy would commit such an atrocious act. Not only that, but the Fish-Man island’s history also has other mysterious elements. As such, many One Piece fans believe that it is all connected, and maybe the destruction of Fish-Man is necessary for them to come back to the top.
27. Zunesha’s Punishment
The Zou arc introduced quite a few mysteries, and while almost all of them have been solved, the one that remains is Zunesha’s punishment. According to the One Piece storyline, Zunesha is forced to wander through the New World and carry the island of Zou on its back as a serious punishment for an unspecified crime it committed in the past.
The only details known about Zunesha are that he was born a thousand years ago in the New World and, at one point, he became a companion of Joy Boy, 800 years ago. Zunesha’s link to Joy Boy makes him an interesting element of the story, and thus, the mystery behind his punishment could help us understand more about Joy Boy’s character.
26. Aokiji’s Speculated Betrayal

Following the time skip, when One Piece fans found out that Aokiji had left the Marines, they were shocked. However, the bigger shock was that he had joined the Blackbeard Pirates as one of their Titanic Captains. It was such a major twist that it led to the development of a theory about how Aokiji is on a secret mission, and he will most likely betray Blackbeard.
If this theory turns out to be true, it will bring a major twist to Blackbeard’s future in One Piece and will also showcase Aokiji’s significance. Thus, it is considered a big mystery, and hopefully, sooner or later, Eiichiro Oda will unveil it as a thrilling turning point for the Blackbeard Pirates.
25. Mihawk’s History and Connection
Dracule Mihawk is one of the very few One Piece characters who has yet to become a significant addition to the central plot. There are only a few things revealed about him in the story, and this mystery that Oda has created around him hints that maybe he has a deeper connection to the narrative than fans actually realize.
Thus, fans have been waiting to learn about his history and his connection to the main plot for a long time. Now that the story has entered the second phase of the final saga, it is high time that the One Piece mangaka starts focusing on his character. Because if it is dragged for too long, he might lose the anticipation created around his role.
24. Hunt of the Buccaneers
The nearly extinct race of Buccaneers gained a lot of significance within One Piece when Kuma became a central figure of the Egghead Island arc. One particular element of the race that was focused on was how they carried a faith in the mythical Sun God Nika as a divine figure who would bring joy and freedom to the world.
When the Egghead arc ended, it looked like the mystery behind the Buccaneers would be left untold, but Oda dropped some hints about it in Elbaph, too. This suggested that maybe they carry a bigger significance to the central plot than the fans realize, and sooner or later, the One Piece narrative will give a detailed description of why they were hunted.
23. Lunarian’s Extinction
Another major, nearly extinct race that holds a lot of importance to the One Piece narrative is the Lunarians. According to the details revealed about them, they were once known as a tribe of “gods” while they lived on top of the Red Line. However, the World Government ordered a hunt for their tribe, and now there is only one known Luranian within the story.
The mystery around their extinction is linked to the foundation of Marie Geoise, and in extension to the Ancient Kingdom. Thus, it holds quite a lot of importance within the story and may bring a big twist to the narrative. There are even theories about how they might be connected to the Mother Flame, which is an added bonus.
22. Remaining Members of the Holy Knights
The Holy Knights have gained a lot of significance since the Elbaph arc started within the One Piece manga series. A bunch of its members have also been introduced, along with Shamrock, the twin brother of Shanks and the commander of the mysterious organization. However, there are still a bunch of them left who are yet to make an appearance.
The Holy Knights are directly connected to the Celestial Dragons and the World Government, which is why they hold a lot of importance. As Shanks’ father, he is expected to be incredibly powerful with a unique ability.
Once he enters the central storyline, he is bound to make a major change that could make or break the plot in a big way. This is why his appearance is quite anticipated, and his actions as one of the Five Elders will introduce a new kind of thrill and intrigue to the plot.
20. Crocodile’s Secret

Sir Crocodile, one of the first villains Luffy faced in One Piece, became a majorly significant character in One Piece as the story moved on. He now holds his position as one of the co-leaders of the Cross Guild alongside Dracule Mihawk and Buggy. Although fans know a lot of details about his character, the one thing that is still a mystery is his secret.
During the Impel Down arc, Emporio Ivankov talked about a particular secret that he used to force him to help Luffy and the others. This secret might not be much relevant to the main storyline, but it certainly feels crucial to his development in One Piece. Thus, fans are eager to know about it, and once he enters the central storyline, Oda will most likely reveal it.
19. Luffy’s Mother
Luffy’s mother has been a hot topic among One Piece fans ever since the story started. While we know about his father and his grandfather, his mother has been a mystery that has never been focused on, even once within the narrative. This makes her revelation even more of a source of intense speculation, as there is a big possibility that she may have a big role to play.
There are many mysteries and speculations about Luffy’s mother in One Piece. Xebec and Blackbeard, which means that the clan’s origin and history are going to play a major role in the future.
16. Shanks’ Destiny and True Goal
One of the biggest revelations in the Elbaph arc was Shanks being some kind of destiny child in One Piece. It certainly added some clarity to one of the mysterious characters in the series. However, what his destiny has planned for him or what he is fated to do is still a mystery, and considering his significance to the main storyline, it is bound to be a big one.

However, unlike the other nineteen monarchs, Lili chose not to become a World Noble for some reason.
