As Stranger Things prepares for its highly anticipated final season, the Hawkins crew will face their toughest challenges yet, including some new villains and old threats. While the return of Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) is all but confirmed, new threats, like the bat-like creatures, might change the game.
Split into three volumes, Stranger Things Season 5 is set to premiere Part I on November 26, 2025, Part II on December 25, 2025, with the final episode dropping on December 31, 2025. Fans are bracing for one last battle with the supernatural horrors of the Upside Down. With an expected mix of old and new dangers, here’s a look at the key villains we might see in the final season.
1. Vecna
Vecna, introduced in Season 4, is undoubtedly one of the most formidable antagonists in the Stranger Things universe. Vecna, also known as Henry Creel, was the first patient of Dr. Brenner’s facility, where Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) was admitted. After a tragic accident at the facility, El overpowered him and banished him to Upside Down. In season 4, Vecna had already wreaked havoc on the group by manipulating their deepest fears and traumas.
The connection between him and Eleven, who unknowingly helped him gain his immense power, makes him a dangerous adversary. He’s already killed Eddie and nearly taken Max. In Season 5, Vecna will likely play a central role, bringing the ultimate battle to Hawkins.
2. Mind Flayer
Though Vecna dominated Season 4, the Mind Flayer, which was introduced in Seasons 2 and 3, may not be entirely gone. This massive creature in Stranger Things has always been the overarching evil behind many of the threats from the Upside Down. It controlled Will in Season 2 and created the terrifying Demodogs in Season 3.
While Vecna has controlled much of the narrative recently, the Mind Flayer could still play a role in the final season. Its ability to control the creatures of the Upside Down makes it a possible ally or even rival to Vecna. With so much left unexplained about the Upside Down, it’s possible the Mind Flayer still has a card to play.
3. Camazots
In Season 5, a new threat, Camazotz, may emerge as hinted by the episode 7 title Escape from Camazotz. In Dungeons & Dragons lore, Camazotz is a powerful being tied to the underworld. It makes him a fitting antagonist for the final season, especially if the group finds themselves trapped in the darker realms of the Upside Down. Based on references to D&D and Mayan mythology, Camazotz is a deity of bats, the spirit of night, death, and sacrifice (via ScreenRant).
Fans are speculating that Camazotz could be an evolved form of the Demobats seen in Season 4. They were responsible for Eddie Munson’s death. The name “Camazotz” also links to A Wrinkle in Time, where a planet named Camazotz is overtaken by an evil shadow entity. Either way, Camazotz’s inclusion would be a dangerous addition to the show’s roster of iconic villains.
4. The Demogorgon
The Demogorgon was the first creature to emerge from the Upside Down in Season 1. While it was thought to be defeated, it’s possible it could make a return in Season 5. The Demogorgon might resurface, either as a minion for Vecna or as a classic monster the team has to face again.
With the Upside Down opening further gateways in Hawkins, the Demogorgon might once again emerge from its otherworldly home.
5. The Human Threats
While most of the threats in Stranger Things come from otherworldly horrors, many fans have pointed out that Derek Turnbow could be a new threat, or rather troublemaker. According to the casting information, Season 5 will introduce a young boy who is a bully to the kids of his age, probably between 8 and 10 years old (via The Direct).
In the teaser, he was spotted behind Mike with other young kids. While Derek might not be a supernatural threat like Vecna or Camazotz, his role as a bully to the younger kids could bring trouble.

Colonel Jack Sullivan, introduced in Season 4, could be a dangerous human antagonist. Despite his apparent defeat, Sullivan survived the helicopter crash and is likely to return in Season 5. He’ll likely continue his pursuit of Eleven or be forced to confront the larger forces threatening Hawkins.
Though Dr. Martin Brenner met his end in Season 4, the possibility of his return is teased by the actor Matthew Modine himself. He might return through flashbacks or lingering influence remains. His actions set the stage for the chaos that followed, and his legacy could play a pivotal role in the final season.
