Hunter x Hunter’s Best Arc Exposes Game of Thrones’ Biggest Twist as Its Most Atrocious Failure

While many Game of Thrones fans agree that the final season was terrible, those familiar with Hunter x Hunter can notice how similar the Daenerys twist was to the Chimera Ant arc. Although both took opposite approaches, the concept was quite similar in terms of the narrative.

Both Game of Thrones and Hunter x Hunter tried to explore how power can subject a person to an extreme transformation. We see Daenerys turn into an antagonistic figure, while Meruem becomes more sympathetic toward humans than his formerly arrogant self. Essentially, both become the complete opposite of how their stories initially presented them.

Still, despite being one of the best live-action series of all time, Game of Thrones underperformed with this development, presenting it as an abrupt plot twist. In contrast, Hunter x Hunter took its time, letting viewers fully absorb every step of the transformation. Here’s how.

A Lack of Motivation: What HxH Mastered That GoT Couldn’t

The way Hunter x Hunter dealt with Meruem’s transformation was truly genius. By letting the events unfold slowly and naturally, viewers got ample time to get invested in Meruem’s perspective, even as an opposing force.

Komugi’s presence proved how even the most arrogant, unstoppable power can crack under unexpected circumstances, and that real change never happens overnight. That slow burn is what makes Meruem’s shift so believable and emotionally heavy.

Game of Thrones, on the other hand, falls apart because it skips that crucial buildup. Where Hunter x Hunter spends dozens of episodes digging into psychological decay and shifting perspectives, GoT rushes through Daenerys’ motivations just to deliver a shocking twist.

As a result, instead of feeling impactful, it felt so abrupt, unearned, and, honestly, kind of hollow. Still, even after that, some viewers argue that Daenerys’ downfall had been hinted at from the very beginning. The real question is: how much of it was genuine foreshadowing, and how much was rushed writing disguised as setup?

The Daenerys’ Twist Wasn’t as Earned as Meruem’s Transformation

To say it was never foreshadowed might be wrong, because there were definitely moments where Daenerys’ descent into madness was hinted at: her parallels with Stannis Baratheon, her frequent use of “fire and blood,” and, of course, her Targaryen heritage.

But across the long span of her actions throughout the series, those hints didn’t build up strongly enough to make her burning King’s Landing, after the city had already surrendered, feel truly earned. It was such a massive shift, and the viewers just didn’t get enough breathing room.

Meanwhile, Meruem’s evolution in the Chimera Ant arc constantly showed with every passing episode how powerful a slow, well-crafted buildup can be. Which is why GoT skipping that process is exactly what caused its big twist to become its biggest misstep.

Even though Game of Thrones still has a higher overall rating, if you compare just this storyline, or honestly, the final two seasons, with HXH’s Chimera Ant arc, HXH would easily take the win.

TITLE IMDb RATING WHERE TO WATCH
Game of Thrones 9.2/10 HBO/Max, Amazon Prime Video
Hunter x Hunter 9.0/10 Netflix, Crunchyroll

But yeah, what do you think? Did Daenerys’s turn work for you at all, or did it feel way too rushed?
