Kenjiro Tsuda: The Jujutsu Kaisen Manga Gave Me “Emotional Whiplash”

Many of you probably know Kenjiro Tsuda, thanks to his role as Kento Nanami in Jujutsu Kaisen. But just like us fans, Tsuda himself experienced an emotional whiplash when he first read Nanami’s final character arc, back when Chapter 120 dropped in the new issue of Jump, which he shared in a recent interview with Oricon.

But the following Monday, the new issue of Jump came out and in the original manga Nanami died. The emotional whiplash during those few days was intense.

Following that moment, Tsuda realised just how attached he already was to the series, even before the anime existed. And when he eventually landed the role of Nanami and had to record that final monologue he had once read in the manga, it turned out to be quite painful for him.

Even though Kenjiro Tsuda already knew how Nanami’s story would end before they even began recording the arc, the emotional toll still hit him hard. Knowing something and actually performing it are two different things, and Tsuda definitely felt that weight.

He mentioned that there was a strange mix of excitement and sadness that he experienced; like excited to finally bring that scene to life, but also sad because it meant it’d be his last time performing for the role. It’s the kind of bittersweet feeling voice actors can often get when they become deeply attached to the character they’re portraying.

I felt a mix of excitement at being able to perform it and sadness knowing that this meant I would be graduating from the role.

When it came time to perform, Tsuda said he poured everything he had into Nanami so he wouldn’t walk away with any regrets. And after finishing those final recordings, he felt like Jujutsu Kaisen had ended for him personally.

Still, he’s fully content with how Nanami’s final moments turned out in the anime. In his opinion, the direction, the execution, and everyone involved in the production put so much care into giving the character the best send-off possible, and we’d very much agree with Tsuda-san.

Kenjiro Tsuda Was Amazed by Overseas Fans’ Reaction to Nanami

When Tsuda eventually visited overseas events, fans were incredibly excited to see him. However, he was genuinely confused at first, wondering, “How do you even know who I am?” And the fans just told him straight up, they knew him from Jujutsu Kaisen.

When I asked how they even knew who I was, almost all of them said they watched Jujutsu Kaisen.

That’s when it really clicked for Tsuda that the series wasn’t just big in Japan anymore. Jujutsu Kaisen had gone global, and so had he.
