An anime adaptation of the manga series Daemons of the Shadow Realm has been scheduled for release on April 4, 2026. The manga, originally titled Yomi no Tsugai in Japan, is written and illustrated by none other than Hiromu Arakawa, the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist.
The television anime is produced by Bones Film, the animation studio responsible for previous adaptations of Arakawa’s work. The project was confirmed by the studio, revealing the broadcast will run for two consecutive cours (as reported by Oricon), providing approximately 24 episodes. Crunchyroll acquired the streaming rights for multiple international regions.
What Is Daemons of the Shadow Realm About?
The plot of this anime focuses on twins Yuru and Asa. The story takes place in a world where specific individuals command supernatural entities known as Daemons, or Tsugai. These Daemons manifest in pairs. The twins are referred to as “the children who sunder day and night”.
The story begins in a secluded mountain village. Yuru is a very traditional person in his village, believing he is protecting his sister Asa, who is confined within a cage to fulfill special village duties. Everything changes when the village is attacked by people with modern weaponry and Daemons. Yuru discovers that the individual he believed to be his sister is a decoy, and the real Asa is with the people who attacked the village.
Following the destruction of his village, Yuru is forced to abandon his lifestyle and enter modern society to uncover the truth behind his twin sister’s defection. This transition serves as the primary catalyst for the plot, a lot like journey of the hero trope. It establishes a clear conflict between the isolated, traditional practices of the mountain village and the advanced tactical warfare utilized by the attacking factions.
Yuru quickly acquires his own pair of Daemons, known as the Left and Right, which act as his primary guardians. His getting two new Daemons creates a big learning curve where he must adapt to commanding supernatural entities while simultaneously navigating a modern world he does not understand, and uncovering the mystery of his sister.
Furthermore, the adaptation features a specific production team. Masahiro Ando serves as the director for this anime at Bones Film. Noboru Takagi handles the composition, which dictates the narrative structure. Nobuhiro Arai is responsible for character designs, adapting Arakawa’s original art style for animation.
Is This New Anime Going to be the True Successor of Fullmetal Alchemist?
There are clear similarities between the classic Fullmetal Alchemist and Daemons of the Shadow Realm which is releasing this spring 2026 along with many other titles. Both have plots that center on a sibling dynamic. Edward and Alphonse Elric are brothers seeking restoration, while Yuru and Asa are separated twins on opposing sides of a conflict.
Both stories have a strict, rule-based supernatural combat system. Fullmetal Alchemist relies on the principle of equivalent exchange in alchemy. Daemons of the Shadow Realm relies on the dual nature of Daemons, requiring users to manage paired entities. Furthermore, both stories involve larger political conspiracies manipulating the protagonists.
While we can see many similarities due to the author being the same, and even the art styling appearing similar, the settings are entirely divergent. Fullmetal Alchemist is set in a fictionalized, early 20th-century European setting centered on military statecraft. Daemons of the Shadow Realm is set in a contemporary Japanese setting, contrasting isolated rural traditions with modern urban environments.
The story pacing and overarching themes also differ. Fullmetal Alchemist presents a clear, overarching objective from the beginning. Daemons of the Shadow Realm presents a mystery-driven plot where the primary objective is to uncover information about the twins’ origins.
But, at the same time, if we are talking all in terms of potential, Daemons of the Shadow Realm can very well be as good as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, considering the involvement of Studio Bones. The studio possesses a documented history of executing Arakawa’s action sequences with high kinetic fluidity.
A secondary indicator of the anime’s potential success lies in the mechanics of the Daemon system. Arakawa designed this power system with strict limitations and logical rules, preventing narrative inconsistencies later in the story. The mandatory dual nature of the Daemons forces characters to be strategic, which reduces the random power-ups in the stories.
This approach to action scenes provides a rigorous, intellectual viewing experience compared to standard supernatural series, where the best thing that happens is someone getting a power-up through emotions. The story establishes rules immediately and adheres to them strictly, creating a reliable framework for all subsequent conflict resolution, just like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
