Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 Episode 9 Ending Explained: How Yuji’s Confession Changed Higuruma’s View of Justice

So, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 Episode 9 delivered one of the most engaging psychological clashes of the season so far. Rather than relying simply on action, the episode shifted its focus to something much deeper – a courtroom trial where morality, guilt, and responsibility are all placed on trial. Higuruma, a former defense attorney turned sorcerer, uses his Domain Expansion, which basically forces Yuji into a courtroom trial.
Meanwhile, in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, Yuji is grappling with the weight of his guilt over the Shibuya Incident, in which Sukuna took over his body and killed innocent civilians. By the end of the episode, what started as a deadly trial transformed into a deeply philosophical confrontation. We see Higuruma ultimately abandon his role as executioner and even help Yuji in the Culling Game. Let us explore in detail.
The Shibuya Incident Charge and Yuji’s Shocking Confession
Hiromi Higuruma‘s Domain Expansion, Deadly Sentencing, is one of the most unique abilities in Jujutsu Kaisen, as this puts both opponents through a mock trial overseen by a Shikigami named Judgeman. Violence is forbidden inside the domain while the trial is being conducted, and the verdict determines the punishment.

Judgeman presents a charge, and the defendant must choose one of three responses – confession, silence, or denial. And after both sides present their arguments, Judgeman announces the verdict. If the defendant is found guilty, punishments can include Confiscation, which removes their cursed technique or cursed energy control, or the Death Penalty, which grants Higuruma the Executioner’s Sword.
In Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 Episode 9, the first trial for Yuji was rather normal. He was charged with the crime of entering a Pachinko Parlor when he was still a minor. Yuji failed to defend himself properly and was found guilty, receiving the punishment of Confiscation. The punishment left him unable to use Cursed Energy, leaving him wide open to attack from Higuruma.
Despite this, Yuji still managed to fight Higuruma with only his physical skills and instincts. However, the real twist in the fight came when Yuji demanded a retrial, leading to a far more severe charge being brought against him. The second trial put us right into Yuji Itadori’s darkest moment – the Shibuya Incident.
Judgeman accused Yuji Itadori of mass murder during the Shibuya incident, when Ryomen Sukuna took over Yuji’s body. Meanwhile, even after faced with the charge, Yuji decided to do something completely unexpected – he immediately confessed.
Neither did he try to defend himself, nor did he explain how it was actually Sukuna who was responsible. Instead, he simply accepted the blame. Now, this move actually surprised Higuruma, since Yuji had tried to lie earlier to get out of being punished for the pachinko crime. However, when it was something like mass murder, something which he had not actually done intentionally, Yuji did not try to defend himself.
Meanwhile, Judgeman found Yuji guilty and sentenced him to the harshest sentence possible – Confiscation + Death Penalty. As a result, Higuruma gained the Executioner’s Sword, which can kill someone with one hit. However, the Jujutsu Kaisen episode then took an unexpected turn.
Jujutsu Kaisen: What Higuruma’s Decision Means for Culling Game
Before becoming a sorcerer in Jujutsu Kaisen, Higuruma saw many innocent people get destroyed by the justice system. Over time, he developed a harsh worldview towards the Justice system. However, Yuji’s confession confronts him with something he has not seen in a long time – genuine moral responsibility.
From a legal standpoint, Yuji wasn’t guilty of the Shibuya massacre. He did not have the intent or the power to commit the crime since he was possessed by Sukuna at the time. However, Yuji refused to hide behind that truth. Rather, he took the blame on himself because he believed that the tragedy occurred because of his own weaknesses.
This was the part that really got to Higuruma. Instead of seeing the “ugly weakness”, which he normally associates with humanity, Higuruma saw a different kind of weakness, one that is rooted in empathy and responsibility. Yuji’s choice to shoulder the blame for the Shibuya disaster reminded Higuruma of the ideals that pushed him to become a lawyer in the first place.
Therefore, in that moment, the role of executioner became impossible for him to fulfill. Even though the domain has granted him the Executioner’s Sword, he ultimately chose not to swing the blade. Moreover, rather than killing Yuji, Higuruma decided to help him by adding a new rule to the Culling Game, allowing the players to share points with one another.
This was a huge deal for Yuji and his crew as they attempted to reduce the casualties in the game by changing the rules. Meanwhile, Higuruma did not forgive him for his past actions – before joining the Culling Game, he murdered a corrupt judge and prosecutor after witnessing injustice within the legal system. Because of that, he still believes he must eventually take responsibility for his crimes.
This bittersweet resolution defined the ending of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 Episode 9. Yuji achieved his objective in the Culling Game, but the emotional weight of Shibuya continued to haunt him. Meanwhile, Higuruma walked away from the battlefield with his faith in justice partially restored, yet still burdened by his own sins.
