Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity just pulled off something no other Big Three anime has managed. Episode 5, “Defend You,” released on August 22, 2026, debuted with a perfect 10/10 on IMDb. That number puts it ahead of every previous record holder among the genre’s biggest names, including One Piece‘s Gear 5 debut, Naruto‘s Valley of the End finale, and Bleach‘s own earlier high point from just weeks ago.
Even if we look outside the Big 3 of shonen anime, Dragon Ball has also been surpassed by this episode, marking a first in anime history – a first 10/10 ranking among the long-running giants of the medium. Without further ado, here’s more on the matter.

Context makes this record even wilder. Before this week, the bar for the best-animated episode across the Big Four sat with One Piece‘s “The Ridiculous Power! Gear 5 in Full Play,” which locked in a 9.4/10 on IMDb for Luffy’s cartoon-physics meltdown against Kaidou.
Naruto: Shippuden‘s Valley of the End clash between Naruto and Sasuke sat a notch higher at 9.6/10, and even that got edged out by Bleach‘s own “The Fire,” which hit 9.7/10 on the platform, when Yamamoto threw down against Yhwach in the first cour. Dragon Ball Z‘s Transformed at Last rounded things out at 9.6/10, a relic of a much older era of animation but still beloved for how well it holds up.
None of those numbers come close to what Part 4 Episode 5 “Defend You“ just pulled off. A perfect score is basically unheard of for any long-running shonen, let alone one that’s been airing for over two decades. It’s a signal that Pierrot Films’ handling of this final arc isn’t just meeting expectations; it’s rewriting what fans think is possible for a TV anime episode. Whether the score holds steady as more votes roll in remains to be seen, since debut ratings on IMDb tend to shift a little once the initial wave of excited viewers settles down. Even so, hitting a perfect 10, even briefly, puts “Defend You” in a category of its own.
Defend You Pushes Ichigo and Orihime to Their Breaking Point
It’s not hard to see why fans are losing their minds over this one. “Defend You” picks up right where Episode 4 left off, with Ichigo’s fused Getsuga Tensho and Gran Rey Cero barely making a dent in Yhwach. From there, the episode just doesn’t let up. Ichigo throws everything he has at the Quincy King, slashing again and again, only for Yhwach’s Almighty to shrug it all off like it’s nothing. Eventually, Yhwach catches up and runs him through with his Reishi blade, and that’s when things get really brutal.
Orihime refuses to sit back and watch. She keeps healing Ichigo no matter how many times Yhwach cuts him down, and that loop of death and revival becomes the emotional core of the entire episode. It’s the kind of sequence that could only work with this level of production, and Pierrot Films clearly understood the assignment. Eventually, the villains catch on and turn their focus toward Orihime herself, and she gets pushed right up to her limit trying to keep Ichigo alive. Meanwhile, over in a separate corner of the Wahrwelt, Uryu and Jugram are locked in their own escalating standoff, with Jugram now wielding a borrowed slice of the Almighty.
By the time the credits rolled, the episode didn’t even bother playing its usual outro theme. No poem, no next-episode teaser, nothing. Just silence and two flowers, one of which silently shed away. That choice alone tells you how much weight the studio wanted this one to carry, and clearly it landed with viewers exactly the way it was meant to. With five episodes still left in The Calamity, and Ichigo and Orihime’s fates hanging by a thread, it’s fair to wonder if Pierrot has already peaked, or if there’s still a bigger gut punch waiting around the corner.
