After the monumental success of Sinners, which earned Ryan Coogler an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, the filmmaker has now turned his attention to television with a reboot of The X-Files. The revered sci-fi series, which originally ran from 1993 to 2002 before later revivals in 2016 and 2018, is being reimagined for the new generation with Coogler behind the wheel.
It’s pretty apparent that this is a passion project for the director, who previously deemed the original show one of the most beautiful American series and revealed that he used to watch the show with his mom back in the day (via Happy Sad Confused). Although the reboot still appears to be in its early stages, considering Coogler is no stranger to reviving a legacy IP for modern audiences, as seen with the success of the Creed franchise, there’s much to be excited about his take on the iconic sci-fi show.
What Will The X-Files Reboot Be About?
The reboot will revolve around two FBI agents, who develop an unlikely bond while attempting to get to the bottom of a string of supernatural and unexplained cases, effectively echoing the Mulder–Scully dynamic from the original. The logline for the show reads:
Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.
Coogler further confirmed that the reboot will be firmly in line with the original’s DNA by incorporating both monster of the week and an overarching conspiracy, adding at the same Happy Sad Confused podcast, “It wouldn’t be X-Files if we didn’t do both.” So expect the new reimagining to retain the original’s charm.
Who Is Involved in The X-Files’ Production?
In addition to Coogler, who will be penning and directing the pilot, Jennifer Yale will be joining the production as an executive producer and showrunner. Moreover, Chris Carter, the creator of The X-Files, is also involved as an executive producer. Carter, however, will not be actively involved with the development of the show, as the director clarified he’ll be a cheerleader to the reboot (via The Wrap).

Carter first mentioned the project back in a 2023 interview, where he revealed Coogler was “going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast” (via TVLine). Considering Sinners proved that the Black Panther director can easily excel within the realm of supernatural, the reboot has the potential to live up to Carter’s magnum opus.
Has the Cast for This Reboot Been Announced?
Even though most of the cast additions are yet to be disclosed, Deadline reported that the reboot has tapped Himesh Patel to star opposite Danielle Deadwyler as the new leads of this project. It’s important to note that while they will be playing the lead FBI agents, who will be spearheading the X-Files investigation, Patel and Deadwyle will be starring as original characters rather than stepping into the roles of Scully and Mulder.
Given the acclaim David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson earned for their portrayal of these iconic figures, who were undoubtedly the heart of the show, opting not to recast these characters is probably the right call and also leaves the door open for potential reprisals.
Will the Original The X-Files Cast Be Involved?
As of writing (March 27), none of the original actors have been booked to return in the reboot. However, Gillian Anderson, who played Dana Scully immaculately during her years-long tenure in the show and its revivals, has spoken highly of this reboot and urged fans to keep an open mind about this retelling (via Gamesradar).
We’ve had a few conversations. He’s such a cool guy and so talented, and the pilot script is really good. So, I would say, ‘Have an open mind and give it a chance because it’s gonna be f***ing cool.’ It really is. It’s something different. It’s different and it’s special.
Even though a few years back, the actor insisted she was done with the role for good after headlining the two-season revival of the OG show, Anderson hasn’t denounced the prospect of returning as Scully for Coogler’s reboot, adding (via Today):
I’m not saying no, because I think he’s really cool. And I think if he did it, it probably would be done incredibly well. Maybe I’ll pop in for a little somethin’-somethin.
While time will tell what holds for this reboot, hopefully, we’ll eventually see Scully and other cast members from the original show in Coogler’s reimagining, even if it proves to be brief cameos.
When and Where Will the Reboot Premiere?
Instead of airing on a traditional TV network, the show will mark its premiere on Hulu, which has officially ordered a pilot (via Variety). The reception to the pilot will determine if a full season gets greenlit by the streamer. Although Coogler’s prowess as a filmmaker inspires confidence, it’s worth noting that Hulu previously canned the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot from Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao over creative disputes regarding the pilot.

A release window for the reboot remains under wraps. As for what to expect, Coogler previously assured that his take on the IP will be “f-cking scary” (via Vulture), revealing that the script for the pilot even received his mother’s approval, so it’s only reasonable to be excited.
