Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 5 Episode 4 Review: Pacing Flaws Masked by a Tense Climax

The fourth episode of Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 5 dropped on April 29, 2026, with big expectations, as in the previous episode, the 4 seasons of lies were finally out in the open. However, while there was a key moment in the entire anime at the end, it does feel like the story barely moved forward.

Kazuya tried to cover up everything with another lie; however, half of the episode was just flashbacks to show the state of his mind, which was already clear in the previous episode. Let’s dive into a small recap of everything that happened in the episode, and review it as well.

TITLE Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 5
RELEASE DATE April 8, 2026 (early release)
STUDIO TMS Entertainment
WHERE TO WATCH Crunchyroll
MAL RATING (as of April 30, 2026) 5.94 / 10

Kazuya Is Still Trying to Cover Up, But Mami Won’t Let Him

The first 5 minutes of the episode contained nothing new; they were simply a recap of everything that had happened by the end of the previous episode. However, we did get a flashback that served its purpose to show what kind of man Kazuya is. When Chizuru’s grandmother passed away, Kazuya told Chizuru that he would protect her at any cost.

After everyone had realized that Chizuru is a rental girlfriend, Kazuya started speaking about how Chizuru is not the kind of girl everyone is making her out to be. He lied once more by saying that they are actually dating. He lied about how, just a few days before the death of Chizuru’s grandmother, they had finally started dating for real.

However, while even Kibe started believing him with a bit of suspicion, Mami dropped another bomb by saying that if they are really dating, they should kiss to prove it. She knows that they are not dating at all, and there is no way Chizuru would go far enough to kiss him to keep up a lie.

A thing to note about Mami here is that during the beach arc in the first season of the anime, all the way back in 2020, Mami kissed Kazuya in order to manipulate him. I think we can all agree at this point that Mami is simply evil.

Ruka Loves Kazuya More Than Anyone

So far in this anime, the only girl that we know who for sure loves Kazuya is Ruka. Her response to Mami’s demand was panic, as she didn’t want to see Kazuya being kissed by anyone else but her. She believes that eventually, that lie will be settled, Kazuya will “break up” with Chizuru, and they can reveal their actual relationship to everyone.

Ruka and Kazuya’s friend (who knew that Chizuru was a rental girlfriend since season 1) starts making excuses that there is no need to go that far, and that everyone should head back. However, Mami makes sure that doesn’t happen. In fact, Kazuya’s grandmother herself wants to see them kiss.

At the end of the episode, Chizuru did end up kissing Kazuya. I feel really bad for Kibe and Ruka. Kibe is Kazuya’s best friend, who has always supported him through everything. However, he was the only friend in the dark all this time. In fact, even now, Kazuya is lying to Kibe on his face.

Furthermore, Ruka is the only one who loves Kazuya. It is a running joke that Kazuya doesn’t just introduce her to his grandmother. However, we saw in a small flashback that Kazuya wants to make sure everything is right, and no one gets sad either.

Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 5 Episode 4 Final Verdict

While the final moment of the episode was full of tension, and we got a key moment of the entire story in the after-credits scene as well, nothing much happened in the episode otherwise. The episode was so lacking in content that it had to rely on the previous episode’s content to cover five minutes.

Since this episode relied heavily on shocked faces and brief flashbacks, the animations were pretty much nonexistent. However, the voice acting of Kazuya has to be praised because Shun Horie did an amazing job at showing the pain Kazuya was in.

If we overlook the fact that this episode barely advanced the story forward, as it practically wasted more than half of its runtime, we can agree that the rest was as good as Rent-a-Girlfriend can get.

Anyways, what are your thoughts on this episode? Let us know in the comments.
