What happens when a franchise built around Monkey D. Luffy suddenly puts one of the greatest events in its history ahead of its main hero? That may be exactly what One Piece Film: God Valley is preparing to do. The upcoming film, announced at ONE PIECE DAY ’26 for summer 2027, is officially centered on the legendary God Valley Incident rather than a new adventure for the Straw Hats.
Luffy has been the narrative anchor of all 15 previous theatrical films. Yet God Valley belongs to an era decades before his birth, placing Roger, Rocks D. Xebec and Garp at the heart of the story. Luffy’s absence as the central protagonist is expected, which suggests that Toei is set to break one of the franchise’s longest-running movie traditions.
One Piece Film: God Valley Breaks a 15-Movie Luffy Tradition
First, the number needs clarification. One Piece currently has 15 completed theatrical films, beginning with One Piece: The Movie in 2000 and ending with One Piece Film: Red in 2022. Toei’s official movie archive lists all 15 releases. God Valley, therefore, is the 16th theatrical film, not the 15th. The “15-movie tradition” refers to something different: across those 15 films, Luffy has remained the central hero even when the stories heavily spotlight other characters.
Strong World, for example, revolves around legendary pirate Shiki and Nami’s kidnapping, but its official synopsis still frames the adventure around Luffy and the Straw Hats. Film Z places the ideological conflict between Luffy and former Marine Z at its center, while Film Gold sends Luffy’s crew into the casino nation of Gran Tesoro against Gild Tesoro.
Even Stampede, arguably one of the franchise’s biggest ensemble movies, begins with Luffy and the Straw Hats entering the Pirates Festival before expanding into a massive crossover involving pirates, Marines, and the Revolutionary Army. And Film Red pushed this formula furthest by making Uta and Shanks enormously important to the story while still anchoring the film around Luffy’s connection to them, placing Luffy at the heart of Uta’s story.
There is even an interesting wrinkle: Episode of Chopper Plus and Episode of Arabasta were theatrical retellings of existing manga material, proving that One Piece movies have adapted established stories before. But they still revolve around the Straw Hats’ era. God Valley could be fundamentally different.
Why God Valley Could Be the First One Piece Movie Without Luffy as Its MC
The official announcement points toward the legendary incident involving Gol D. Roger, Rocks D. Xebec, and Monkey D. Garp, and will adapt the God Valley flashback arc from the manga. The film is scheduled for summer 2027 as part of the manga’s 30th-anniversary celebrations.
The setting itself makes Luffy’s traditional role difficult to reproduce. Most importantly, he is not involved whatsoever in the manga arc because, well, it takes place years before he was even born. The God Valley Incident happened 38 years before the current storyline, during an event that brought the Rocks Pirates, Roger Pirates, and Marines into one of the most consequential battles in world history. Garp and Roger ultimately confronted Rocks, while the incident ended with God Valley disappearing from the world’s maps.
The incident connects some of One Piece‘s most important figures and mysteries: Rocks’ ambition, Roger’s rise, Garp’s legendary reputation, and the hidden crimes of the World Government. The story itself exists independently of Luffy. There is also a crucial distinction between what is confirmed and what is inferred. While Toei has confirmed God Valley and its summer 2027 release, it has not officially stated that Luffy will be absent, and you never know; they might make some changes in the adaptation, as this is their first canon movie. No full cast, director, or detailed synopsis has yet been announced.
So calling it definitively “the first One Piece movie without Luffy” would still be premature. But the possibility is what makes the project extraordinary. For 15 films, the theatrical formula has essentially been: take Luffy and the Straw Hats, place them inside a spectacular new conflict, and let the wider One Piece world collide with them. God Valley will likely reverse that formula. Instead of Luffy entering history, the movie could show the history that shaped the world Luffy eventually inherited. And that would make the film’s greatest protagonist not necessarily Roger, Garp, or Rocks, but the world of One Piece itself.
If Toei truly allows God Valley to stand on its own as a story from the old era, One Piece Film: God Valley may become more than the franchise’s next theatrical adventure. It could signal that the enormous history behind his journey is finally big enough to carry a movie by itself.
