One Piece has evolved significantly from Luffy’s adventures and journey toward his goal to a complex tale that mirrors the real world and its problems. Eiichiro Oda has incorporated events and elements from world history and various cultures, enriching the story with his genius. Contrary to his impressive pool of knowledge, we have the worst Devil Fruit ability in One Piece, which raises questions about the inner workings of the mangaka’s brain.
Throughout One Piece, Oda has come up with hundreds of interesting Devil Fruits abilities. Whether you’re looking for powers that can shake the world like Whitebeard’s Gura Gura no Mi, or something that makes the world a better place like Kuma’s Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, there are countless options available. However, what went through Oda’s mind as he thought of Alpacaman? Let’s try to understand!
Alpacaman has the worst Devil Fruit ability in One Piece
Alpacaman was first introduced to us during the Wano arc of One Piece. He was a member of the Beast Pirates, a Gifter to be specific. Alpacaman consumed the SMILE fruit which transformed his head into that of an Alpaca. The Devil Fruit granted him the ability to use his spit like a projectile, enabling him to aim and shoot objects and people with it. Some anime original additions showed him using weapons and the Armament Haki.
When Kidd escaped the prison during Wano, Alpacaman attacked Luffy with his spit to question him about Kidd. Luffy and Hyogoro even fought against the Gifter, and the latter lost, unsurprisingly so. It’s both funny and bizarre how the man with spitting ability attacked the to-be emperor to assert his dominance.
As silly as it sounds, this isn’t something new for the die-hard fans of the series. In One Piece, Eiichiro Oda has maintained a great balance between the serious and the silly. Alpacaman was probably a result of the silly, but he’s not the only character like that.
Eiichiro Oda’s genius and his silly
Whether it’s the characters, the plot progression, the plot twists, or the foreshadowing, One Piece performs phenomenally well on all fronts. The world-building in the series allows the characters to exist and continue their own adventures beyond their character arcs. Oda makes it a point to insert their stories through cover pages or the SBS. This helps the fans stay in touch with their favorite characters who have temporarily or permanently exited the story like Enel or Bege.
Contrary to the intricate and complex narrative, we have the unserious side of the mangaka. There are many characters in One Piece with goofy designs irrespective of how crucial or serious their role is. Vegapunk is a prime example of this, his design was a literal representation of what he’s known for.
Similarly, the Gear 5 reveal was extremely hyped but the cartoonish movements defied the expectations of fans. In this way Oda continues to surprise fans, making them wonder if it’s the silly they’re about to get or the serious, and both aspects of One Piece are enjoyable in their own right.
One Piece is available to read on the MangaPlus app and website.
