The Sopranos star Lorraine Bracco enjoyed manipulating James Gandolfini
Actress Lorraine Bracco played the role of Dr. Jennifer Melfi in the critically acclaimed HBO crime-drama series The Sopranos. The series stars the late James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano, who seeks therapy from Melfi while keeping his mob boss profession a secret.
The documentary series Wise Guy explores the show’s creation with interviews from Bracco and other co-stars sharing their experience of working with Gandolfini. During one segment, Bracco revealed how Gandolfini had never been to therapy which allowed her to manipulate him.
Jim had never been in therapy. So that was kind of fun to lead him, push him, manipulate him in a way…which is why I wanted Melfi. I thought he was more intimate with me than anybody, and I loved it.
Bracco made the above statement (via Esquire), revealing how she shaped her on-chemistry with her late co-star.
Given the show’s premise, the chemistry between Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano and Bracco’s Dr. Melfi was integral to its success as they shared many emotional scenes. Hence, it is easy to see why Bracco developed a more intimate relationship with the legendary actor than their other co-stars.

We didn’t know to negotiate. I think he felt terrible about that. So he called us all into his trailer one by one and gave everybody a check for $30,000.
De Matteo made the above comment, revealing how the multiple Emmy Award-winning actor was generous enough to share a portion of his salary with the rest of the cast.
