With a chance to end the war, Invincible finds its heroes at a crossroads. Is it worth the risk to take the swing at Thragg? Or are they walking into a battle they cannot win? Mark (Steven Yeun), Oliver, and Nolan (J.K. Simmons) give the Coalition a few extra Viltrumites, but it might not be enough. Can Nolan continue his uneasy alliance with the Coalition, or will returning to Viltrum be its own lure? Invincible Season 4 Episode 7 — “Don’t Do Anything Rash” — gives us one of the most shocking episodes of Invincible yet.
Invincible Season 4 Episode 7 Recap
On a worker planet, slaves of the Viltrum Empire plant a bomb to sabotage a mining operation. In the aftermath, we discover the sabotage occurred when Thaedus was still a member of the Viltrum high command. He pushes for leniency, but Emperor Argall asks for Thragg’s opinion. He advocates for a genocide of the population, cutting down the population by 25%. Argall sides with Thragg despite Thaedus’ opposition. Afterward, Thragg admits he’s worried about Thaedus’ shifting mentality. That night, an assassin successfully slays the Emperor.
In the following days, Thragg gives the eulogy at Argall’s funeral. After publicly executing the Grand Regent, Argall calls for the Purge, and dozens of Viltrumites begin to slay each other. The streets literally run red with blood and bodies. He eventually calls off the killings and tells the remaining Viltrumites that the Cosmos is theirs. Thragg apologizes to Argall’s skull for his failures.

Thaedus tells the heroes of the Coalition that this is their chance to take out Thragg. Their attack is worth any sacrifice, even among this group of heroes. The group boards a ship and flies toward Viltrum, recording goodbye messages and chatting about final meals. Battle Beast once again takes it too far, and Nolan worries about Thaedus’ proclamation that he will not let the Viltrumite Empire have any chance to rise again. Mark and Oliver are part Viltrumite.
Before they arrive, Nolan talks to his sons, assuring them that Thragg is stronger than they are. Nolan struggles to tell his sons that he loves them, but they know. The group says their goodbyes and flies through what appeared to be a ring around the planet. It is, instead, a graveyard of Viltrumite corpses, a reminder of the Viltrumite weakness when the Scourge virus killed so many. They fly through the ring of corpses, but some of Thragg’s Viltrumites hide among the dead. When the group flies through, they find Thragg waiting for them.
The team is instantly surrounded, and the battle commences. The bug juice weakens Viltrumites, making them susceptible to Allen and Battle Beast. Tech Jacket only has 10 darts but uses them effectively. The arrival of Space Racer brings Rognarrs into the fight, which kills some of the Viltrumites. Nolan is freed from his battle and takes a shot at Thragg. However, he misses and is punched onto the surface of Viltrum.
Thragg uses their separation from the group as an opportunity to turn Nolan back to his side. He warns that Thaedus will not be kind to Mark and Oliver. He continues to preach that they’ll rebuild the planet, but Nolan tells him no. Thragg punches him into the sky, telling him the death of any Viltrumite is a loss he feels.
Thragg returns to the fight in space, where Oliver attacks. However, Thragg catches the punch, dismembers him, and punches his jaw off. He calls Oliver weak and pushes Mark to attack him. When Mark does, Thragg is “not impressed.”

The battle continues, and Nolan tells the team to fly together. He pushes Space Racer to the front of the pack and has him fire on the planet itself. Flying at high speeds, Nolan, Thaedus, and Mark chase the infinity blast, with Thragg in pursuit. The explosion becomes a world-ending connection with the three rebel Viltrumites, helping confirm the end of the planet. Viltrum collapses as they fly through the core, and the planet explodes.
Everyone, Viltrumites and non-Viltrumites, stares in awe. Thaedus tells the other Viltrumites to surrender, but Thragg attacks, decapitating him and crushing his skull. He then attacks Nolan, telling the Coalition they are next. Mark tells Allen to find Oliver and chases after Thragg. Thragg punches through Nolan and crushes Mark’s skull. However, before he delivers a killing blow, he stops and tells the remaining Viltrumites that there are too few remaining. They fly away, leaving Mark and Nolan floating through space.
The remaining heroes of the Coalition find Mark and Nolan, collecting them from space. Mark wakes up weeks later in a health pod. Nolan and Oliver also survived, with both healing. Oliver has been given a cybernetic arm and jaw, while Nolan and Mark are bandaged up. Allen has been named the new leader of the Coalition, but no one can find the Viltrumites. It strikes Mark that they’ve gone to Earth.
Is Invincible — “Don’t Do Anything Rash” — worth watching?
Yes, with all the cards on the table, it’s clear that Kirkman and his team wanted to go for broke. “Don’t Do Anything Rash” is a rather straight adaptation of issue 75 of the Invincible comic, but it remains shocking that they were able to put so much of it on screen. There’s more development for Thragg, specifically in his relationship with Nolan and in the reveal of the Purge. With the battle and that background, “Don’t Do Anything Rash” is easily the best episode of Season 4.

Where do we even start? Thaedus is dead, but he’s destroyed Viltrum in his final moments. I was certainly starting to worry about his negativity towards anyone with Viltrum blood, so perhaps this makes Mark safe from the coalition’s crosshairs. Oliver is half destroyed, and if Allen were to follow through on Thaedus’ extreme views, they simply would not have saved any of the Coalition Viltrumites in the aftermath of the battle. For now, that means our heroes are all on the same side.
Then again, Oliver is barely on anyone’s side. His jaw is gone, and his arm ripped off. As he quickly becomes a combination of Darth Vader and Grimace, Invincible is finding a line between Oliver and Mark. Even if he heals, will he ever be the same? Or will he feel jealous of his brother? Perhaps more dangerous for Mark and Nolan, how will Debbie react?
If the Viltrumites are heading towards Earth, the Coalition will need to hurry. There’s no way the planet could hold off more than a couple of Viltrumites, let alone ten or more. Will Thragg take over the planet quickly? Considering all of the loss felt on Earth between the many Marks, Conquest, and Nolan, it feels like Earth is never going to fully recover from the war heading their way.
